Do not overlook USED gear. Around here I frequently run across some real bargains on time tested solid state combos in the 100 watt plus category. You might luck into some by Fender, Peavey or Ampeg that were made in the USA and are super reliable. On the other hand the warranty on a new Fender combo is hard to beat, plus the old USA stuff is way bulkier and heavier to move which is of course partly why it has lasted so long. A USA made solid state state Fender, Peavey or Ampeg are about the only ones I would consider buying used for a teenager. Most of the new amps out there use MDF construction instead of solid wood and in the long run are just not as durable as the old solid wood stuff which would endure a drop or fall in stride. I do not expect to see any current production import bass amps last the way the old USA made ones have.

Make sure the amp you look at has the actual wattage, as is, without needing to add an external speaker cab to it to get the maximum rated wattage out of it. Some amps are called a certain watt amp, but needs the external speaker cab to achieve the maximum wattage.

Quite right. It never used to be that way ... or at least I had never encountered it before but one of my own amps is like that. Good call. My (now discontinued) GenzBenz acoustic guitar amp was advertized as a 300 watt amp but the spec sheet says 200 watts. When I dug deeper it mentioned elsewhere in the documentation that with an extension cabinet the amp would provide 300 watts.

Good point! My Hartke HA3500 is rated for 350W, but only if two 4 ohm cabs are plugged in. You can use two 8 ohm cabs, but the output will be lower. If you only have one plugged in, you get 240W max.

The very minimum to jam with a band would be 100 watts.

I agree. If you're going to play in a band (other than a folksy/acoustic band), you need 100 to 250 watts.
With the folksy/acoustic band, you want like 25 to 40 watts.

The Rumble 100 is an excellent choice...

This surprised me that you said Rumble 100. I have a Rumble 100 that I bought about ten years ago and I was pretty confident that Fender no longer made it. Interestingly, Fender does currently sell a Rumble 100 but it is not the same as my Fender 100. I think it's odd that they reused the name for a different product.

Anyway, I really like my old Fender 100 (and others do, too). It is part of the "backline" in my basement. We use it for jamming here.

The Fender Rumble Series is in it's 3rd Generation now. The Rumble 100 3rd Generation, is now a 100 watt combo, with a 12" speaker. It's also made out of a light plywood, in place of the heavier, less sturdy Medium Density Fiberboard, the earlier Rumbles were constructed with.
