Looking for a beginner bass amp advice for teenager.... something to practice with but yet have the power to play along with others in their "band" (drums, guitar or two).

This is for a friends son, I want to steer them in a good direction. This teen (14yrs old) just received a "Dean Z Metalman Bass" which has Active Pickups ($299 approx)

My thoughts are something in the current Rumble line...
(My son who plays guitar with these kids uses a Blues Junior guitar amp)

Would the 25W be sufficient and have the power for both practice and basement band practice... or go bigger as in 40W, or ? suggestions?_______

Oh, the band genre choice is mostly Metal, some Classic/Hard Rock

Thank You... I want to provide some good advice.

Great question! Fender Rumbles are your best bet as they are very nearly 'teenager proof'. As soon as you say drums, you're saying volume at the same time. The very minimum to jam with a band would be 100 watts. The Rumble 100 is an excellent choice, and the Rumble 200 would be even better. For personal practice and quiet jams with a guitarist the Rumble 40 is outstanding. Many members of the Fender Rumble Club that play semi-professionally use a Rumble 500 for gigs, but also have a Rumble 40 for personal practice. 8)

+1000

One hundred watts at a minimum. And a multi-speaker array is preferable IMO although a quality 15-inch speaker would likely get the job done.

I'd definitely go with the biggest amp, watts wise, that you can if there's drums involved. They can get loud (also depending on the drum kit and drummer) and you might be taxing a smaller amp to keep up, even more so if there's guitar involved in the mix.

Definitely something in the 200 watt range or higher, otherwise he'll just get frustrated being drowned out.. Best thing is that most amps, even the bigger ones and combos especially, have headphone jacks on them so he can still use it at home for quiet practice...

All advice well taken... I have concluded that a 200w Rumble is the best choice. Now trying to convince the kids parents of the $$$ they need to spend, is already proving to be a challenge. I met some resistance last night as I texted them in a group text.
If I was a Powerball lottery winner, i'd be giving gifts for music all over the place.....

Thank You for your input.

Buying an amp is analogous to buying a home......

It makes more economic sense to grow into a house than it does to grow out of one.

You have chosen wisely, mund1! Should the less wise with the $$$ protest, you might present the Rumble 100 as a very attractive and reasonable alternative. If all else fails the Rumble 40 is a very worthy first bass amp.

Especially when you are going to need a large well sound abated jam space. Wax On. Wax Off. Yin. Yang. May The Bass Be With You.

No officer. I don't know these loud juvenile delinquents that have invaded my personal space. Yes, when those neighborhood girls arrived they did have their clothes on, but they just kind of fell off.

Yes, I do have a lawyer. Why do you ask?

Nothing good ever happens after this line. Thanks for the chuckle.

Make sure the amp you look at has the actual wattage, as is, without needing to add an external speaker cab to it to get the maximum rated wattage out of it. Some amps are called a certain watt amp, but needs the external speaker cab to achieve the maximum wattage.

Quite right. It never used to be that way ... or at least I had never encountered it before but one of my own amps is like that. Good call. My (now discontinued) GenzBenz acoustic guitar amp was advertized as a 300 watt amp but the spec sheet says 200 watts. When I dug deeper it mentioned elsewhere in the documentation that with an extension cabinet the amp would provide 300 watts.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
