From what I've read, they actually had the Ampeg technicians go with them on tour to work out any bugs, or deal with all of the bits and pieces, being they were prototypes, like you said.

Yes, that's right Paul. I was going to mention that also. Marshall had some techs that went out with some of his UK Amps. Jim Marshall was afraid Hendrix would want techs to accompany his acquired amps. Hendrix told Marshall, he wanted his Roadies to learn how to fix the amps on the road, without any Marshall Amplification assistance. Hendrix also stated to Marshall, he expected no price favors, he would pay Marshall the full retail price of the amps he bought from him. Hendrix also had Marshall use transformers in the 100's that put out a more bass tone. That was the key to Hendrix's different sound, with less of a trebly sound that Jimi didn't like. Listen to a song like, "Third Stone From The Sun", and listen to his feedback. Very obvious in that tune.

Didn't Hendrix actually use the Marshall bass heads at one point or another? Those were essentially the same amp as the lead version, or then that tonal difference, I think, from what I've read about them.

No, I don't believe he did use the bass heads. The switching out of the transformer kept the other head parts of the lead 100 intact. There were a few minor settings between the lead, and bass 100's, depending on which lead head it was at that time. There were some Marshall heads that weren't really known in the market place. Marshall kept some industrial secrets away from the other amp makers, and taylor made exclusively for players like Hendrix.

I also seen pics with him using other amps, too. I think they might have been Sunn, but not certain. I'd have to search for it.

I've seen pics of Jimi playing Sunns as well. If he was playing somewhere without his amps, he played whatever was there. Hendrix wasn't that particular. He did however, love to play wherever he could. He even played bass in the studio with Leslie West one time.

I've seen pics of him playing bass, especially with a Hagstrom 8-string bass.

Hagstrom basses were pretty popular, and expensive back then. From what I remember about them, the ones I came in contact with, were very heavy in weight. The old term for them, and other heavies, BOAT ANCHORS.

That would probably come in handy if there was a bar brawl and you had to clear your way out of it. :P

Pretty much, but they were a bit expensive for that. That's what Roadies were for!

True. I imagine you guys were pretty buffed up from hauling all of that gear around in the first place. :P

We sure didn't take crap from anybody. And watched over the gear like it was our own stuff.

I have to do that myself, the last time I played a gig, besides the radio show. In a club, I pretty much stay on top of my gear and don't take my eyes off of it. It only takes a second for someone to pick up a guitar case and walk out.

That's about the way things work. It's tough to be everywhere at the same time.

That's true. You sometimes need eyes in the back of your head.

One thing at least, keep your bass right with you. The amp well,........ that's a bit tougher.
