It's not exactly some puny little amp, either. Have you had any chance to crank it and see how the 15" rattles the windows yet?

Yeah,....................... I did Thursday afternoon. I forgot I was using a SS, and not a tube amp. Then I pulled out the Bass knob, for extra Bass. It got to a serious level fast. I believe I pretty much I have a higher watt SS, Super Bassman.

It's a definite A-plus head. Lighter than a 65 pound Super Bassman, a lot lower in price, and sounds about the same as a Super Bassman.

There's also the Bassman 800, which is $999, but I've seen some for $849 as a scratch and dent on AMS. Have you even seen or heard anything about that model? I remember starting a thread about it over a year ago, but I've never really heard much of anything about it since then. Then again, I don't typically go to Talkbass, and the few times that I've been there, I've never seen any mention.

I've heard very little about the Bassman 800's. They may not be going over as well as the Bassman 500's, because of the greater power not matching up with most of the lower watts ratings on cabs. Fender at this time, doesn't have an 8 ohm rating for it in the spec section.

Yeah, I did notice that it's not listed for some reason. It could be 400 watts into 8 ohms, like the Ampeg Portaflex 800 is, but that's just my speculation based on the fact they're both Class D. I think another thing that might not be going in the Bassman 800's favor, is the price. I mean the Ampeg SVT 7 Pro, which has 1000 watts, and the tube preamp, is $200 cheaper, and the Portaflex 800, that has no tubes, is $400 cheaper than that. I'm just even using those as an examples, not counting the 50 million other brands around with similar specs. They haven't really promoted the hell out of it, and the bass head market is pretty saturated as it is, I think. There is all of those factors to consider. The fact that there doesn't seem to be a big thread (I only found one short one before it debuted) over at Talkbass about it might also play into that. Not to give that place a ton of credit, but that is a big source of bass related info, it seems. A lot of bassists like to go there for discussions about gear. I just can't get into it for some reason. Maybe I'm too friggin' antisocial. :P

True, the Bassman 500 does seem to be the favorite son of bass amps in that configuration. Some players don't see the practicality of the Bassman 500, as compared to the Rumble 500. I can see their reasoning, but I like the setup, and appearance of the Bassman 500 over the Rumble 500.

Well, it does offer more features than the Rumble, especially with the tube preamp. The Orange Terror Bass heads were even more expensive than the Fenders are, so it's not like they're the most expensive you could buy. I just happened to get mine at a ridiculous discount.

Any time you can get an Orange for a good price, it's worth it.

Yeah, I couldn't pass that one up. In fact, that was the only time I've even seen one go for that. I haven't looked in awhile, but I haven't noticed too many of those on the used market, if at all. I don't know how many they even sold in the first place, but I do know they quit making them right after I bought mine. I also know John McVie, from Fleetwood Mac had bought something like four of them to use on stage right during the time they stopped manufacturing them. I have no idea if he still does, or he went back to Ampeg, or whatever. I can only image what four of those, with a pile of 15" speaker cabs would sound like. Talk about flapping your trousers! :P

A lot of power going there, that's for sure. I'm getting into the 15" more now than I think I have ever in my playing over the years. I like the 15" cab, more so than the 15" combos I've had.

Well, I've noticed that 15" speaker cabs are often a little bigger than a combo with a 15" speaker in them. Which makes sense, because you have to have room for the amplifier components inside of it. I suppose it's not a drastic difference in size, but maybe enough of one to make a difference in sound, but I could just be guessing about that.

Combos usually lose bit of the open internal area the speaker needs to move air, because of the space taken up by the power / control section. One advantage a half stack, or stack can have over the combo design.

That's true. I suppose the trade off is the all in one portability with the combo. It's just one thing to carry. Then again, with amps being so lightweight and portable these days (the Orange being a prime example,) it's probably not as much of an advantage. If I were just to use one cab with the Orange, or any other Class D head with a carry bag and sling, it's essentially like carrying a combo.

I suppose if you have a dolly, which I think would be a good investment, especially if you have a lot of gear to move, that isn't that much of an issue, anyhow. You know, that really should be a next purchase, especially if doing New York City gigs. Parking can be iffy there, and loading and unloading from a club or venue might be a pain in the arse, so the less trips the better. We were lucky that the last time we played there, there was a parking garage right across the street.

I didn't have an amp at the time and had to use a house amp, though. I still had to carry a bass, guitar, and gear bags. The house amp was a Peavey keyboard combo, which was a motivation that got me the Rumble combo, and led me to this forum. It wasn't the worst thing I ever played though, but it wasn't what I'd call an amazing amp. :P

Some of the compact aluminum folding hand trucks are rated at 150 pounds. I have one I've used for moving, and it's good.
