The SA I'm the closest to is only about 10 miles, 20 minutes from my place. That's the one I frequent. There are two other SA's in south FL, one in North Miami, about 28 miles, and the other in South Miami. A bit to far to just hop in the car. If I needed anything from that store, I request they transfer it to my local store. One of the warehouses SA has, is in Tampa. FedEx next day ground is usually no problem to me from there.

I've been to the Sam Ash in Tampa and Clearwater locations, but that was back when Thoroughbred Music was there, and Sam Ash bought them out. I imagine that must have been anywhere in the late 90's to early 2000's when that happened. I was there in the mid 90's. At that time, you could get a Ric bass new for $920, or that's what their price was. I remember that, and trying it out. That was still a lot of friggin' money. Probably about the same, if you adjust for inflation.

You're not kidding about the Ric prices being way too high. I guess inflation can be factored into, and American workers make more than some in the instrument manufacturing workplace.

That's true, and a lot of their stuff is still hand done, and they have elaborate binding and other details. Plus, they never expanded out and outsourced to other countries, which I suppose would have made for cheaper prices, but then again, you wouldn't get the same product, probably. Then again, if you compare that to a company like Alembic, who have been around since the 60's, they aren't as expensive. Alembics are a hell of a lot more expensive. Nice friggin' basses, though. I managed to get my hands on a couple back in the day.

Ric manufactures a lot of their parts used on their product. Still a good way to control parts availability, and maybe QC also. It does cost though to do it.

Well, at least you generally know what you're getting, even if you have to wait a long time to get it. I remember at one time, they were swamped with back orders, but they refused to change how they made their product.

I remember most dealers had no clue when they would get any, or their entire order for Rics.

I guess now a days they're a lot more available. Maybe they managed to catch up a bit.

Well to help on the catch up, Ric discontinued the Ruby finish because of the excessive man hours taken to apply that finish.

Yeah, and a few other models. They did put out a new 5-string model, though. That ruby was a cool finish, I thought.

I liked the Ruby finishes well. It had a very fine sized gold metal flake in it.

They were very cool. I've also seen some special run finishes that were cool, as well. Usually some places like Chicago Music Exchange had some that had them made for them.

I bet those were on the upper priced side of town. To me, the 4003 looks really swell in a white finish. But then again, I like Fender Jazzes in Olympic White also. The Arctic White is decent too.
