Yeah, they do that. If you didn't have to sell something to get another thing, do you think you'd have kept some of the things you got rid of, like the Ric or Gibson basses?

Yes, no doubt about it. The Super Bassman for one. I like basses, but amps are my real Achilles Heel. After a lot of different amps, my choice for number one, has to be the Fender Amps. In a way too, I'm glad I didn't do the extra cash for the Bassman 800. The Bassman 500 @ 8 ohms, 350 watts, is everything I really need for my home playing. The 115 NEO has a beautiful sound. I feel like the speaker is broken in, nice and easy.

Yeah, that should be a perfect setup for you. Speaking of the Bassman 800, I wonder how many people have even used it, or how many have sold in comparison to the other models? I've never seen a lot of mention about it online, but I haven't exactly been looking for it. It's kind of expensive, when you compare it to other brands with the same or similar specs. I guess that depends on how much you like Fender and willing to spend. Then again, Orange is even more expensive than Fender, and they have their following. The only reason I even have an Orange head was I got a ridiculous deal on it that probably shouldn't have happened, but did. If I were to pay full price, and had that kind of money to do so, I seriously doubt I would have bought it in the first place. It doesn't have enough EQ options that say the Ampeg or Fender has, which would be useful to me.

I've seen a couple of players on TB that are using, and praising the Bassman 800. I'm seeing a lot more using the Bassman 500 than I realized. Talking about the EQ settings on Fender, or Ampegs, they're ok. I can do without them, but in my case, they're on the head. Your Orange is a big time stage monster. They don't always have the settings on board.

My main problem was getting the right tone with the violin bass, but that was just as much fault with the bass as the amp, I suppose. Although, I've always got a good tone with the Fender amp and the violin bass. The one thing the amp does have going for it is power, though.

At times a hollow body can be a bit of a challenge tone wise. Its almost like there is to much resonance going on.

Luckily, it doesn't have the sound holes, like a lot of other ones did. Then, I'd also have to deal with feedback, especially as loud as I've had to play. That's probably why they went by the wayside going into the 70's, for the most part. The amps got bigger and louder, because of the places to play got larger. That, and I suspect music tastes change with gear changing with them. You'd know that better than I would, since you were there, and I was just a little kid going into the 70's, and not even born until the end of 1971.

I suppose those having feedback issues are not much different than what happens with acoustic guitars, since they aren't much different in construction. I used to have a Kramer acoustic bass back in the mid 90's, and it howled like an SOB when I tried to play it through my Peavey Databass amp at full band volume, unless I moved away, or turned my back from the amp, which wasn't easy to do in a garage space, where we practiced. At least they have feedback suppressors now, or I guess a noise gate pedal might work.

I still like the way the hollow body sounds and feels, though. I imagine if I had a higher quality model like an actual Hofner, that would probably be less problematic with my amplification, or trying to record it, since I'm assuming the pickups on it are a lot better.

They do sound nice that's for sure. I guess the Hofner I I had, was one bass I would've liked to have hung on to.

I'll bet it would blow the roof off my copy, but then again, what do you expect for $100? I can't complain, because I've certainly got my money's worth for that bass, and then some. I've certainly could have gotten worse, and paid a lot more doing so.

And another good thing about your Violin Bass, it gives you the hollow body you were wanting to acquire for a long time.

That's true. I did want one since I was 16, and they weren't something that I could find, especially back then, unless it was expensive ones that were 60's vintage, and even those I only saw a couple of times. There was no internet or anything like that, so what you saw locally, is what you got, pretty much, at least in my case.

The EKO was one of the few I would see occasionally around town. And then they weren't around. The Epi Viola, and the Asian Hofners are pretty decent too. They aren't seen at the price you were able to get yours though. At times I don't go a long with more money makes it better either.

The only other violin bass I've ever come across in person, besides whatever is online, was a Jay Turser model that a local shop (no longer here, unfortunately) had displayed in their window. I used to go by and see it all of the time, until I finally went in there and played around with it. That was my first experience with one, and I thought it was pretty nice, once I got used to it's light weight and size. It felt very fragile to me at the time, but I was also playing on a Fender Precision Bass Lyte, which in spite of it's name, is still a beefy instrument in comparison.

It is a royal pain thing to find the brand, and or model that you may want to try out, or even just eye-ball it before maybe ordering one online, or through a local store. I even had a problem at a certified G&L store when i wanted to order an American G&L SB-2 bass, back in 2010.

I remember a G&L dealer or two when I lived in Florida, but that was around the early to mid 90's when I went around to those. Nice basses, from what I remembered. It's funny how that brand never became massive like Fender, when it was made by the same guy, and apparently improvements to his early designs, at least according to himself. That's what marketing will do for you, I suppose.
