I graduated in 1970, and was lightly taught the Metric System. Almost as in a passing way, and then that was it. Basically showing the differences between Standard, and Metric.

Didn't they try to get the US to switch to the metric system in the 70's (maybe late,) but everyone resisted the idea? I seem to remember hearing something about that. I don't remember anything about it at the time, since I was a little kid and my earliest memories of any sort of schooling were the alphabet and learning to write cursive. I remember these giant writing pads that had lines going horizontally through them, with a segmented line in the center, and we were suppose to write the letters inside and around those lines.

They did attempt to do a change over to Metric somewhere around the late 70's to early 80's if I remember the timeline. It obviously did't go over. One thing that did jump to metric, was the soft drink industry. At least the two liter bottles. The automotive industry did start to put on the speedometers, kilometers per hour with miles per hour. Some tires may have had a brush with some metrics, just not the actual wheel size.

The military uses it, as you'd know, as well. Kilometers, millimeters, etc. Do you remember 2 liter soda bottles being glass? I do, very briefly, but then they started making them in plastic, with the black bottoms, originally.

Yeah, we did klicks, for Kilometers. I think I kinda' remember the glass two liter Coke bottle for a short time. I definitely remember the reinforced, black bottom two liter plastic Coke bottle.

I'm guessing the military use of metrics might be in correlation with NATO, which is or was mostly European countries?

Another thing I remember from up until at least mid to late 80's, is they still had glass bottles (although, they've brought them back more or less) for sodas, and you could bring them to a store for deposit. I used to take them to the Circle K that was down the street from my house in St. Pete, and that was maybe 1984, or so. I remember the Circle K wasn't there before that. It was some other place that got torn down and that put up there.

NATO, and SEATO would be a good reason for Metrics in the military.

I used to get some cash from going around to the job sites in the early 60's when I was a kid, picking up soda bottles the construction workers left behind. They knew we would be snagging the bottles for the .02, or .03 cents per bottle. Depending on size, and brand of the bottles. the grocery stores back then, had a special area for bottle returns.

I remember in Florida, back in the early to mid 90's (maybe they had them in your neck of the woods, too) they had these machines around town that you could bring your aluminum cans to, feed them in, and they'd give you cash for them. My brother drank a lot of beer, so he'd collect at least 3 large lawn barrels full of cans and bring them there and cash them in, then use the money to buy more beer. If I recall, I think it gave you back change like quarters and not dollar bills.

I never saw those machines. They may have been around, I just wasn't aware of them. Sounds cool.

Yeah, they were pretty handy. I guess that was before a lot of recycling programs were initiated so you could make money doing that back then.

I don't think solid waste authorities were around back then.

Maybe not in Florida, at least.
