None of my favorite bassists (Jack Bruce, Noel Redding, John Paul Jones, Bill Wyman, Felix Pappalardi, Chris Squire, Roger Glover, The Ox, etc) used Fenders. They all played real bass amps.

That is exactly what I am on about. Real bass guitarists don't use Fender amps, at least this is the situation outside the U.S.

Paul, is that Joy Division in your avatar?

The guy who replaced Peter Hook used a Fender head of some kind for New Order's recent BBC 6 Music Live concert ft. Elly Jackson / LaRoux (coolest human on the planet imo). See https://youtu.be/RdyzGTVrdKA and you'll get a glimpse of the Fender here and there. Also looks like he's got the cab facing backwards, but that could just be my eyes......

Yes it is Joy Division. They're one of my main influences as a musician.

I take it he got all of that to compete with your set up? :P That's some serious firepower there. 8)

That's not even the half of it, Paul.

Since that photo he's added a third Acoustic 370/301, a couple of Sunn 2000S's, an SVT, a V4B, plus a Bassman 135, and a Showman.

The only thing he's still looking for is a Fender 400PS.

I have to say, I think that 400 PS looked pretty bad $@!. Image

435 watts tube, but of course you needed three cabs, one for each channel. That would be a work out hauling all of that.

As well, the 400PS amp was quite finicky when it came to optimizing the output stages to wring the specified 135 watts from each leg and only the most skilled technicians were deemed competent enough to perform such micro-adjustments as per Fender designer Ed Jahns' stipulations. The Tung-Sol 6550 STR power tube was created at his request specifically for this amp. The "W" bass bin speaker enclosure had the drawback of producing very little stage volume due to the inherent nature of folded-horn configurations. However, fifty feet out from the stage and it sounded (and felt) like a 10.5 seismic event.

Yeah, I take it that probably contributed to it to being around only 5 years. I did find this about it: http://timeelect.com/400-histy.htm I also saw on Ampwares that the head weighed 84 pounds. I'm sure that was fun to haul around, although it side the cab was 121 pounds, which I suppose compared to a 165 pound SVT 8x10" isn't too bad, but you'd need three of them. I guess that's the price to pay if you want all of those tubes.

I'm lucky my Orange Terror Bass 1000 weighs 10.58 pounds (with a nifty carrying bag that you can carry over your shoulder) and it does have two 12ax7 tubes in the preamp, which sound pretty good, and my Carvin 18" speaker cab weighs around 61 pounds. Although, I am getting a 2x10" cab to go with it, so that's going to add to it a bit.

Indeed......the 400PS head alone weighed more than a Twin Reverb Amp!

+1

Better to invest in a Sunn Coliseum and a pair of 118M cabs.
