Thanks, Lightnin', for your post about American Pharaoh one fantastic thoroughbred.

When I was a young sprout, back in the days of Willie Shoemaker, my Dad and I used to make friendly bets on the jockeys (and their horses). We spent many hours watching the races which had weekly coverage on the TV. It was quality time with my father and, in her younger years, my mother spent time working with ranch horses in Alberta/Montana. Later I hit the saddle, sores and all. Based on some of the guys I worked with (a couple of them owning racers), I'm glad I never got hooked big time. Guess I'm more of the Steeple Chase board type.

Still, I hope your ticket paid off. :D

Cool.. !!

Actually met the 'Shoe' back in the '80s at Arlington Park in Chicago.

Willie was coming off shoulder surgery and was up in the Boxes at the next table.

Bought him a drink and had my pic taken w/ him... possibly the best jockey ever !

Btw, my ticket did pay off - $43.75 (also took American Pharaoh to Place for $10 and won $15). I didn't let Mrs. LMN cash them in though, you have to surrender the ticket to cash it out.

Instead, she's gonna bring them home tomorrow and I'll Xerox them, then send them in for payment. That way, I'll have a scrapbook record of the Tix.

cheers!

With 3-5 odds at post time, the prices very better than expected.

Box to wire! Congrats also to jockey, Victor Espinoza
and to trainer, Bob Baffert.

Now to the breeding shed, sad but true...

Wow! You met a legend in the racing circles, Lightnin'. That's great. Congrats on the ticket. a keeper for sure.

Incidentally, Eddie Arcaro was another fave of my Dad's. Arcaro won more American races than any other jockey, and is the only jockey to have won the Triple Crown twice. Still, I loved Willie's career.

I wouldn't mind the breeding profits from American Pharaoh, though.

Cheers back at ya! :D

Hi Lightnin, another bit of racing history made , first female jockey to win Melbourne cup, and if that wasn't enough on a 100/1 outsider to boot.
never got the horse racing gambling bug, my father was though, not huge amounts never had it to begin with just small time, studied them like his life depended on it though, could count on one hand the times he did win big, came in and threw the winning into the air when we were kids, took us to some race meeting at times, I remember picking a horse and my bro picking another came in 1st and 2nd rank outsiders, think my father tore up his form guide we were only kids at the time, don't know where his finished.
Mrs LN has one cool job

No Kidding.. !!

Many years ago, when I was running the Intercontinental Hotel in Chicago, we had a Saudi (one of the Princes I think) come over to auction off prize Arabian semen.

They sent ahead a liquid nitrogen holding facility for the prince's arrival. He came into our underground parking carrying a Haliburton briefcase, flanked by 4 bodyguards. The briefcase contained 12 vials of the horse juice. These were removed and placed into the liquid nitrogen vat where two of the bodyguards stood watch 24 hrs.

The price stayed a month and flew out to various auctions around the country, each time taking one of the vials with him for the auction.

The batch was worth $20M US... and this was the 1980s !!

cheers!

Your horse(s) would have to win a lot of races to buy that stuff.
