I went to SW's site this evening to browse a little. When did the prices go up on Fender's? I noticed modern players that were 399 are now 499. Standard Teles and Strats that have been 499 are now 599?? $100 is a pretty hefty all at once increase. :?

If that's so, they must be trying to keep up with Gibson's increases.

You're out of date. Gibson has overall dropped the prices from the 2014/2015 level. Most models have gone down in price at least $100, and sometimes far more. Like the 2016 Firebird which is now $1100 street, as opposed to last year's $1900 street, or the Les Paul Standard, which went from $3300 street to $2800 street. For a real bargain, an LP Studio Faded is now $800.

I thought I noticed that. I know some Fender amps have gone up, but they've done that in the past, though. Sometimes they run a sale and knock it back down $100 or $50. Maybe they jacked the prices so they're planning another one of those rebate sales so you think you're actually getting a bargain. :P Either way, I certainly hope the quality is in line with the price increase. Especially where the Standard series is concerned.

That's fine for now. Give them a few months. They'll be up there again.

I think Fener does a price increase in the fall, Call SW back up and ask em about the price increase on old stock, tell em it's not fair and you'll take your business somewhere else, like Sam Ash or MF. Be diplomatic about it though.

MF gives an additional 15% off to ASCAP/BMI members. Beside me writing a few songs that's probably the only thing I'll ever get out of ASCAP.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/ ... tar/h76527

and extra 15% brings is down to $509.99.

See who needs to eat this month.

You'll want a decent case for that one too.

and eventually to put on a proper tele bridge. :D

If Leo wanted a 6 saddle bridge on his tele's, he would have put em on. :D I'm just sayin

Good Luck.

That's not an original Tele bridge the way Leo Fender originally designed them. Remember that guitars back then had a wound G string, and the three saddle bridge lent itself naturally to the intonation dip between the 2nd and 3rd string, by switching saddles at that point. That's right, the 3 saddle bridge was a direct result of 4 wound and 2 plain strings!

When plain G strings arrived, and intonation changed to 3 up + 3 up, the original Tele bridge was not well suited at all, and more or less inventive steps were made to cope with the new situation. Like players bending the screws. Like bastardizations like the above Joe Barden saddles on a Fender bridge.

Also note that the first ones had steel saddles. Fender quickly changed to brass because it was much easier to mill, but demand made steel come back a couple of times before brass was generally accepted as "the" Tele saddle material.

The Strat never had the Tele intonation problem with a plain G string (although there was the too high pole piece problem).

Leo Fender learned from his mistakes, and for his second company, the G&L ASAT had six saddles as standard. So yes, he wanted six saddles, and he put em on.

But sure, if you want to go original that Leo parted ways with, feel free. With three uncompensated steel saddles and a wound 3rd.

Those E Tuners didn't go over to well.

No they didn't and there was no way I was ever going to buy a Gibson USA model with the G-Force tuning system on it. Fender got all of my new guitar budget for 2015 because of that.

Dropping the automatic tuning system did lower the price of the 2016 models but Gibson is being deceptive with some of their USA guitar pricing. The $1,199 G-Force stripped SG Standard ships with a gig bag instead of a hard case this year. So does the 2016 Firebird. Add the cost of a decent case and they're right at or above American Standard Fender pricing.

The Firebird never had Tronical tuner.
And the bag instead of case is likely a small factor, but not the main reason - you certainly didn't get a $800 case with last year's Firebirds...

So yeah, there is some price drop on the guitars themselves. On average, and taking into account normal tuners and lack of case on some models, I'd say most of the Gibsons have dropped around $100-200. Some less, and some more.

Anyhow, the combination of the Gibson and Ibanez price drops and Fender price increases is visible in the stores. I just visited a GC, and Fender certainly had a much smaller presence than last year. Fender might have increased their prices as a delayed reaction to Gibson increasing their prices for two years, and got caught by surprise by Gibson's big price drops.
Anyhow, I predict that Fender sales will suffer, and apparently, the local GC seems to think so too.
