Any of you folks ever art-deco-paint a guitar?

'Got a Dillion Mosrite-ish copy which is 'calling' to be stripped of its electric blue paint and done in a Tiki-South Seas motif.

What are some of the common / recommended / acceptable techniques for stripping, sealing, staining, undercoating, paints, top coats?

Thankee, mateys!

Go to Ace hardware and explain what you want to do. They'll probably hook you up with some acetone or something.

It depends on the finish you have on there now. If its a poly on there they are a pain to strip. You can get Klean strip at home depot as well as naphta to wipe it down after striping finish.

I thnk Deco is a great idea. Maybe make the guitar look like one of those old French posters from the 20's.

Get Dan Erlewine's 'Guitar Player (Magazine) Repair Guide', 3rd Edition. It'll be the best $30 you ever spent, especially when it shows you the amount of equipment, facilities and work you'll need to invest in that kind of a job. I thought about doing guitar refinishing last year, thankfully this book talked me out of it!

Hello JSJH,

Back in the day
I did a couple of "unique" paintjobs.

Somebody liked them cause
they got sold or traded away.

I'd like to see em today
to see if they survived.

Cheers.

Thank you, fellow Lounge-ers, for your thoughts.

'Am seriously considering taking the body to a 'furniture dip' place for stripping, or sanding / scraping it instead of embarking on a chemical adventure at home.

Tentatively, also going to replace the competent but jive-y P-90 copy pups with AVRI Jazzmaster Fender pickups. Maybe the heads with Grovers.

Really, the Dillion-Mosrite-sort-of-look-alike is a surprisingly playable and toneful guitar for a knockoff.
