Thanks FSB. I started out on my musical journey back in 1963 and I've never stopped loving and playing music and will carry on for as long as I'm alive. As you know music gets in your soul and keeps you feeling young.
I have quite a lot of guitars that I will never sell, I will hand them down through the family. A kind of legacy that can be enjoyed by next generations that will come along. You never know, some guitar genius might appear one day.
Like most guy's of our generation I had to work hard and wait a long time before I got my first good guitar, a Fender Telecaster and man I was the happiest guy in the world, I took it home from the shop and just stared at it for hours.
I will certainly let my heirs know exactly what they have got, there is history and stories behind all of them and for all it's hardships I think we lived through a great, fantastic and exciting era.

My dad started playing at 6, by the time he was 17 he was on the road with Dizzy Gillespie. For 45 years I heard him practice the same scales every morning I can still hear them). He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at 70, by 73 he couldn't remember my name. Long after he couldn't name the items around him he could still play his sax like a kid, that let me know he was somewhere in there. The act of playing music is so deeply ingrained in the brain that is often last to go. I firmly believe that playing music will keep your mind sharp.
Pop left me his prized Selmer MARK 6 Tenor(played with Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Kenton and at The Blue Note, The Apollo and untold other clubs and recording sessions even with the Philadelphia orchestra.)
I thought I would always keep it, dad said I should make a lamp out of it (something he threatened often). We got a call from a musician friend of dads, Ronny Rubin, He knew of a professional musician in Philly that was a huge fan of pops. The guy is a full time player and was delighted to hear the sax was still around. He held the instrument in such reverence that we had to let him have it (he was beside himself). Musical instruments are made to be played, and there was no way that I could let it collect dust. So it’s still out there after 70+ years doing its thing.

Yeah great story there Eroot64, my mother has dementia so I know what you're talking about and I agree, music keeps the mind active and alive. I hope that sax goes on singin' for a long time yet.

Loved your story about your dad and his sax, eroot64. Good on ya.

I and my wife spend time almost every day with my mother-in-law (I call her my buddy) because it's time to be as good to her as she was to me (and my wife), and simply because I love her, and she loves to sing with me and for anyone. Music is important to her. She, in her wheelchair, has Dimensia, and it is rapidly progressing, but there are good times amongst the hills and valleys. The nursing home is full of visiting musicians who make a difference for residents.

I too agree about sharing instruments and knowledge to others who can contribute music back to others.

There is a cop in this city who gives his time and has community support to keep underprivileged kids off the streets with music lessons and donated instruments. I may have friends and relatives who would like my equipment when it's my time to go; but, as they mostly are aging without experience, I would prefer someone who definitely will use the gear as it is meant to be played, and hopefully they will pass it along in the same way. My wife has been alerted to this, and I hope some kid(s) will reap the benefit of my Strat, amp and whatnot, and, perhaps, these budding musicians and singers will share what they learn with others.

I encourage each and everyone to do the same or similar. Pass it on. :D

Great response FSB, I agree with all that you say there, I hope many others do too, we must keep the guitar music going through the generations no matter what the future invents.
Here in the UK the government have started putting money into finding a cure for dementia and not before time.

The whole dementia spectrum is tragic, its a fate worse than death, hope they get a handle on it soon.

I turned 65 a year and a half ago and I was retired at the time. Since then I have gone back to work after I got a management offer that I could not refuse. I still play out 8-10 times a month, but I started skipping January and February last year, too brutal for an "old" guy, not to mention the guitars and amps.

Good rockin', Rhumba. I also started cutting my hair short a while back...
