I was about to post an article about this, but you did already. Yeah, just got the news in my Alligator Records newsletter (the label he was on.) That's a real bummer, I liked them a lot. :( R.I.P. Smokin' Joe.

Not only was Joe a heck of a guitar player, he was a great guy. Probably twenty years (!) ago I had the pleasure of being introduced to Joe and his partner in crime, Bnois King, before their show in NYC. Sensing that they had a willing audience in me, Joe and Bnois launched into a riotously funny diatribe about life on the road and the characters they meet. And then they hit the stage, and wow. Just wow. Two of the finest blues men ever. Joe will be seriously missed.

He lived a little to the east of me (the Dallas end of D/FW), and played hometown gigs regularly...he was a nice link to the SRV years/style of Texas Blues, but I always appreciated that he was not content to stay on that track exclusively. He created his own groove and style, and further enhanced that by pairing up with Mr. B'nois King.

RIP, Bluesman
