Hi,

I really like the color of the pink Squier Bullet, but feel I might prefer a better guitar - a Fender perhaps costing something in the range of $500 to $1000. However, the only pink I find in a Fender series is shell pink. Not bad, but not quite the bubble gum pink that the Squier Bullet offers. Any suggestions? I suppose I could try the Squier and adjust/fix/modify things that I may not like. Or, maybe I could find a used Fender Strat and have it painted? What do you folks think?

David

There's always the Fender Japan pink one, if you can find one used:

Hello David, welcome to the Forum. Very cool first post, thank you for posting a photo. We love gear pic's and gear questions. The Squier Bullet Stratocaster plugged into a couple of Fender Twin Reverb amplifiers on 7 or 8 will sound just fine. You will be able to tell if you want to change a pick-up, at that volume all of the advantages and disadvantages or obvious. Have fun here and especially choosing a guitar.

Nice colour for sure. Welcome to the Forum, David.

+ 1 to all above, if your heart is set on that color, buy it. The electronics will be low quality, that does not mean it will sound bad, but if you play a lot the switch and pots will eventually wear out. These are all easy to replace, so when they do go, you can replace them with better parts.

Also, If you are like me it is a lot easier to modify or tinker with a cheaper guitar, and this will help you learn how your instrument works. :)

To add to the above....

Squier Bullet is around $130

You are thinking a $500-$1000 guitar might sound/play a little better.

If you picked up that Squier, you would still have around $370-$870 to make it what you want it to be (based on your budget). Upgraded pickups, electronics, nut, saddles, etc. Some people think it's crazy to put that kind of money into a Squier, but I say if it yields a great guitar that plays and sounds great, what's in a name?

If you want to take in the project yourself, that's great. But you'd have a decent little budget to have a qualified technician do the work too.

A Squier isn't too shabby, I think. I have a Tele Custom that's a Squier and it's a nice playing instrument. Of course it's not going to be some '52 original, but you could probably buy 100 Squiers for what those go these days. :P I have to say, that pink is a pretty cool color. 8) I wouldn't mind something like that myself, or orange.

If it's really the color you want, I'd start with that and mod, mod, mod! That color seems to be miles off from the other suggestions so if that's what you have your heart set on then make it your own.

What's in a name after all? You only need to worry about making yourself happy.

Welcome Aboard David...

...from my perspective it would be easier and probably less expensive to upgrade the Squier...

...painting & finishing is the hardest part to get right...

...you can get a Custom Shop Strat later...

...and have them match the Squier paint!

YMMV

I had a pink Squier Bullet Strat, as my first guitar with single coil pickups and a whammy bar. It was on sale for a discount price ($120?) and was a great "learner" instrument for me. I put heavier strings on it and learned to do a complete setup. At some point in the year or two that I owned it I had to reflow a cold solder joint on the volume knob.
Even so, for some reason I got to crave something a bit higher end, and got an Arctic White Fender Standard (not "American Standard") Strat with a maple fretboard. I mostly like the looks better. More classy, I guess. I paid somewhere in the neighbourhood of $600 Canadian, IIRC.

When I bought the Fender Strat, I traded in the Squier Bullet. The guy at the store plugged the Bullet into an amp to check it out and played it for a minute. He stopped, looked up and smiled, and said "Sweet!" Clearly they were not in the habit of investing any time to do a proper setup on entry-level instruments, and he was surprised that it sounded as good as it did.

As far as the colour goes, I think a slight orange tint to the pink would look great. More like a coral pink or flamingo pink, or a lighter tint of Fiesta Red.

I am going to go against the consensus ... Yes, Squiers are very good guitars. I bought a Squier VM Thinline that I had budgeted aftermarket pickups and tuners for to "make right". As it turned out, the tuners were fine and stayed (I did switch out the pups to Fender MIA Tele Std pups, though, for $30). But I am not a big fan of the Bullet. If it were an Affinity or better, I would agree. Just one humble opinion, though...

I’m going to go against the tide here. Go out and buy a used MIM Stratocaster and then buy a new body in the shade of pink you like and change over your parts to the new body…

The Strat you have could be the basis of a pretty good main guitar with a few upgrades, even a new set of pickups could make a world of difference and you could gradually change hardware etc. over time and end up being the envy of all your guitar playing buddies.

Yeah, or a shell pink P or J Bass. 8) Did they ever make a Tele in that color? I don't think I've ever seen one.
