Unfortunately, playing by ear takes time to develop......some of us longer than others. There's just no short cutting experience.
But here's something that should help you. It's the Nashville Numbering System and it's based off of the circle of 5th's. When you hear that "off" chord, it gives you a clue of which chords to look for in a given key. When you find that chord, then you will have to listen closely to determine whether it's a major, minor, etc.....
Just keep at it.
Through the years progress has seldom come smooth and gradual for me. Many times I seem to grow stale and then I finally bust through that wall.
Good luck to you and don't give up.

Thanks grh. That chart looks very useful. I have played off and on since I was in the 3rd grade when Mom made me take guitar lessons. Since then I've played for a couple of years or so then stopped. I didn't really "give up". It was just that work and family took priority. Then I'd pick it up again for a while. Then I'd learn a bunch of songs I liked and then things would start getting a bit boring because I wasn't improving very much. So now I'm not working and my son is on his own. So now work and family aren't in the way of me applying myself. I'm going to start a new thread asking for help in the area of how to improve and viewpoints from people here. The internet is here now and the amount of information seems limitless. Therefore I feel bombarded with options. Which lessons to take (and pay for). Watching people on youtube and picking up bits and pieces. Stuff like that. Hopefully I can get some help on how to continue to improve.

Thanks again.

Jack

I received my first guitar when I was 11. Started off learning songs by listening to records and help from a Mel Bay E-Z To Learn guitar book.
Through the years I have learned from whatever source was available at the time....fellow musicians, 8 tracks, cassettes, cd's and now youtube......which you can learn the actual licks in songs. So no more play and repeat over and over. Saves a lot of time.
My son has just played off and on for about 10 years or so. Has never stayed at it long enough to fully develop into a player, but he sometimes plays something that just blows me away. I wonder how in the heck did he learn that? He gets it all off of the internet.
You might try doing a search on youtube for ......chords to (song)......Just beware that everyone who uploads a video doesn't have it right.
But mainly stay positive. Like I mentioned, there are times that I get in a slump. I don't sweat it. I just keep playing and trying to improve on what I do know. Then I wake up one morning and the learning process starts flowing again.
Best of luck to you. You'll get there.

I have a hard time hearing what key a song is in(maybe too much time working around jet engines) but if someone tells me I can follow along. Sometimes wish I would have taken music in High School and learned all that but I still have fun. I also sing in a church choir which is in all sheet music. I struggle when we do stuff in weird timing - sometimes we'll cover 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 9/8 all in one song with a 3 or 4 key changes thrown in and I definitely wish I'd taken time to learn theory but most of the time is easy without it. I have no idea what the note is and if someone asked me to hit an E I couldn't do it if my life depended on it, but if I can hear my opening tenor note I can use the scribbles on the page to walk it up and down. Same with guitar except without the scribbles - just tell me what key you want to do it in. If I know the song that's great but I can have fun playing songs from the 30's and 40's that I've never heard before as long as I know what key they are playing it in. I might be adding something that I thought should be there rather than what is supposed to be there, but it still fits and if you've never heard the song before you just take it where you think it should be going.
