Question "Where do picks go when you drop them" is it a pick black hole? Pick heaven ? Hell? It's crazy . . .

And where do picks go when you drop them? Many years ago if I was playing an acoustic guitar, my picks would invariably go right into the soundhole...my bandmates would just roll their eyes and wait until the end of the song so I could turn the guitar over and shake out the pick. I'm sure this has never happened to anyone else.

Actually, when I was a kid, my picks also flipped into the sound hole. I had long forgotten about that. Thanks, for the reminder, rudorama. I no longer have those guitars, and now I know and remember why I no longer have those picks. ROTFL.

This is no longer a problem for me. No more sound hole. I now play a Strat. :D

Gud 1
Nope. That would be too easy to lose a pick. :D

I think you would have some serious trouble shaking a pick out of that one.

Maybe we should drill holes in our picks and tie strings to them for retrieval. :P

You could use duct tape. That seems to work for everything. :P Seriously though, I understand your plight, but I have a problem with my hand cramping when I use a pick sometimes, as well. That's why I usually just use my fingers.

Happins to me as well, when I first started to play I asked a pro with over 30 years experience "how long until my fingers and hands don't hurt" he said"never and sometimes it hurts worse" all to true.

I rarely use picks, but that's more because I don't feel I have the same control as with a fingernail. But it's even worse when you lose one of those. Superglue is my friend.

Years ago I used to fold a piece of sports tape over the top of the pick to have a better grip. Now I like textured Snarling Dogs Brain picks or Dunlop's Maxgrip picks. Each brand has their own style of textured surface ln both sides of the pick. They feel akin to holding a small double sided piece of sandpaper.

As for all the dropped/lost picks over the years, I heard they were reported found with a whole bunch of missing odd socks.

I use to carry picks with me because a guitarist friend of mine never had one when he needed one. Good luck in getting it back. :P It didn't matter because I often got them for free because I also knew someone who worked in a music store.

If you're desperate to keep a pick oriented, try one of these:
Herco® Flat/Thumbpicks from Dunlop.
Image
Four different thicknesses. They feel more like a flatpick than the usual thumbpick.

I used to have nothing but any number of sharkfin-shaped picks, Tortex or nylon.
Image Image
The first joint of your index finger fits the convex curved edge, and the scalloped edge goes against the middle finger's first joint.
Now, not so much.

I tried a few with small bumps, like Brain nylon "cat-tongue" picks, or with raised lettering like Graphtech (by Tusq), but now I prefer (paradoxically) the more slick material, like Ultex, Dunlop Gels (polycarbonate?), and Dunlop Delrin.
Maybe because they are smooth there is more surface contact.

If I was going to sculpt a pick grip (with hot glue, Plasti-Dip, or hockey tape) I think I'd make two horizontal lines on the thumb side (middle and top edge?), and two vertical lines on the index finger side.

What kind of music do you play? Death metal? Bluegrass? Jazz?

Everybody drops picks but I use v-picks now, they stick to my fingers and they come in many shapes, sizes and styles. You may think of them as expensive but to me they are worth the money, I don't use anything else now. In my opinion the best picks I've ever tried and I've been through a lot in my time.
