Bummer.
Sure would be awesome to see another album come out.

Getting back to topic, anybody ever find their appreciation of a band actually increases with time? A couple of years ago I threw on some Nazareth for the first time in at least a decade or more. Prior to that I always thought of them as not much more than a party rock band but I discovered they had some pretty good musicianship and also had great taste in tone. I was like, who'd athunk?

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Great choice Matt ! I like their hit Hair Of The Dog. 2 of their albums I go back to frequently, No Mean City and Malice In Wonderland, both albums included Zal Cleminson in the band. 8)

+1 on a lot of the previous bands.

I'm not so sure that the bands go out of style as much as the music. Except for "Weird Al" Yankovic novelty songs have all but faded from back in the 60s novelty heyday.

Different genres slipped away with only a trace showing up at times, Clapton is credited with the Blues re-introduction, and Elvis worried about his longevity with today's music trends. Boy! If he only knew.

Bands and singers willing to adapt (like Santana and the Stones) will always have a following. IMHO YMMV.
Earth, Wind, and Fire still look funky Disco (I luv that band), and I thought Rap was a passing fancy.

Amongst other things, I believe a band with great musicianship can find longevity their friend.

Without knowing (as opposed to expecting) a song list, fans will fill stadiums, arenas, and concert halls simply to see and hear individuals or a band. This can bypass age related choice and trends, and this often claims new fans.

It must be pointed out that previous related experiences and memories are also part of the same formula. Promotion and sense of belonging or emulating plays a part. That being said, there is obviously no one thing that ensures a long term following. Musicianship, as we know, is not a necessity, considering the fan based crap as well. I'd like to think that before a concert, or after, choosing a recording of a favorite band would be based on the musicianship and audio qualities; but, we know that is not always the case. Musicianship, however, is a definite plus factor IMHO though. YMMV. My bet is that one would leave a poor sounding event before a poor performance, unless performance over sound is an accepted choice.

Lastly, It might be safe to say that large venues require showmanship while small venues may make musicianship a priority and, perhaps, get away with it. There is always the small venue intimate performance as well. In the end, I really can't say what works and what doesn't because personal choice is just that - personal. 8)

Noticeably, the better musicians usually have better sound gear. Think Yes, The Moody Blues, and such. Tribute bands will keep the musicianship and performances alive longer than socks. :D

I think most bands from 90's, 00's, and so far of the 10,s stick with me the most

ZZ Top

Same lineup since 1969 (Yes, I know Dusty and Frank joined after the first demos were recorded, but the other guys were placeholders while Willy G and Bill Ham were getting things together)...

Almost all their albums sound fresh and timeless, with the exception of their two best-sellers, (Eliminator and Afterburner), which are VERY 80's sounding...not that there's anything wrong with that.

If you had never heard "Francine" or "Chevrolet" before, you would think it's a new song by some retro-leaning rock band..."She's a Heartbreaker" and "Enjoy and Get It On" could be from a brand-new Red Dirt Country band...likewise, if you listen to "Two Ways To Play" (from the criminally overlooked "Mescalero" disc), it sounds like a song that the Foo Fighters or someone of that ilk could record...they have ominous, mysterious "story songs" like "Precious and Grace", "El Diablo" amd "Master of Sparks"....they have some really crazy (musically amd lyrically) Zappa-esque excursions, like "Manic Mechanic", "Heaven, Hell or Houston" or "Crunchy"...and what do you call "It's So Hard" or "Asleep In The Desert"? Relaxing soft-rock if I ever heard it...and of course, they always keep one foot in the Blues.

The thing about ZZ Top is that people only hear about 5 or 6 songs--Tush, La Grange, Gimme All Your Lovin', Sharp Dressed Man and Rough Boy...maybe Legs.

They've had four distinct phases in their career, maybe 5, and depending on what song (or album) you hear, you're not sure how to categorize them.

If you've never heard it, listen to their 1996 disc "Rhythmeen"...it's one of the best hard-rock/blues-rock albums of the 1990s, if not ever (as well as the first of their "Drums-Bass-Fuzzy Guitar" trilogy).

They're (properly) labeled "Classic Rock" but that label sells them so short. Listen to their deep tracks, not their hits, and you'll discover a great band you didn't know about.
