24th Sept 1991, Nirvana's album 'Nevermind' was released in America, entering the chart at No. 144 on its first week. The album which peaked at No. 1 in January 1992 has now sold over 30m copies world wide. The idea for the now iconic front cover shot of the baby swimming came after Kurt Cobain and drummer Dave Grohl saw a TV
documentary on water babies.

I remember that. I was 20 years old at the time. I did buy it on cassette not too long after it came out.

An album that blew pop music right out of the water.

I still like the "b-sides" from that album. Certain songs should probably never be played again due to radio saturation (not their fault). But that just shows how much this album struck a chord with the public at the time.

I remember when that album came out...my first thought was, "Thank God that hair metal and shred will be pushed aside!"

"Pop music"? Not at all ... 80s metal bands like Ratt, White Lion, Warrant, Motley Crue, David Lee Roth, and MANY others?? Yes, it killed them. And right there in the fight was also Pearl Jam's "10", Alice In Chains' "Dirt", and Soundgarden's "Bad Motorfinger". The Seattle grunge revolution was in full effect, going through 1980s metal like a chainsaw used to take off shoelaces. And "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was the tip of the spear. A few of them were eventually able to re-surface a decade later, but they were all mostly toast.
