Not a chance. Considering my stock amplification I actually like the Celestions. They’re a pretty good match. Especially for the price.

A better or different amp might be a different scenario for desiring a speaker change; but, if that day comes I’ll look into it. I do, however, believe that there are combos out there that are designed to make a great marriage according to plan. Past recordings would justify that IMHO. Just a wild guess: I’m betting there have been more combos used in recording studios over the years than head amps and cabs (and I like head amps). Drop the dummy cabs on stage and you’ll likely see a lot of combos big and small. Bass gear is obviously in a different camp and I get that.

It’s like hot rods. A well executed rod takes money and time. Letting others do the trials and tribulations can often be beneficial. At other times you just can’t improve on stock. Especially since the manufacturer (or admired musician and his/her sound) use resources, knowledge, and experience that are unknowns or not available outside of the place of origin. Or the purchase may be sponsored as opposed to emptying the pockets. No sponsorship? That’s how my cymbals work. Good but limited. :P The most cherished sponsorship for a drummer is usually cymbal sponsorship.

Choosing and changing new cabs is an easier practice than auditioning raw speakers IMHO. Auditioning a replacement alternative speaker usually includes a different amp. A roll of the dice for the most part. Head amp auditioning is also convenient. Very desirable, generally speaking, over combos I believe. There may be mix and match combos for sale out there; however, I know of none. But, combos have their place, and many have a history of speaker matching, whether stock or swapped, that needs no dispute. Others play the price point game. It would be great to think a higher priced or higher rated speaker will be an improvement and often it is, but it can be a terrible mismatch too. Also, a combo’s custom speaker might be acceptable for stage and rehearsal, but it could create a problem with recording or re-recording if it’s a one-off. Sometimes it comes down to not being able to acquire a discontinued speaker. Game on.

In the end, it’s a personal thing, and it’s a common belief that few in the audience know the difference unless it truly sucks.

Ah! But, if it’s great there’s a chance. Me? I simply trust my ears and mojo. Hopefully, that happens upon the first purchase, and at the very most I will learn from the first to make a second wiser decision, knowing there’s good, better, and I question best. With years of day in day out speakers of all kinds playing with my eardrums I’m pretty confident that I know different.

Yeah, there are many variables and other factors involving speakers, cabs, amps, and the whole bit. There usually isn't a one size fits all solution to it, either. Sometimes, you can get lucky and get pretty close, though.

That’s all anyone could ask for. Besides, with audio and other things, it’s the journey that’s often fun.

Well; traded my 2004 Fender DG-14S/12 (12 string acoustic) for a Fender Mustang IV amp yesterday.

Now, let me tell you why (and vent some).
Had my 12 string on Craigslist for a LONG time---because I simply didn't want it---too many strings for me. I had planned to buy an acoustic/electric amp with the money I was to get from the sale.
The guitar was in 'mint' condition, and the fitted Fender hardshell case was in 'excellent' condition (both the first owner and myself took VERY good care of them)...so I was asking $275 for both (also threw in a Korg chromatic tuner).
I understand that "value" varies from instrument to instrument...as well as in the eye of the beholder; but the problem I soon faced was people researching on-line the year and model of the instrument for sale, and everything (on THIS particular guitar) came down to PAST sales on Reverb of the DG-14S/12. These (perhaps hard-up) fools were selling this guitar for about $100 less than I was asking...giving those looking to buy mine a 'red flag' of over-priced.

Now let me explain to you how I look at things; the guitar has a solid Spruce top, with Mahogany back and sides, Rosewood fretboard and bridge, and Tortoise pick guard. Go price a new one (today), subtract $100 for used in mint condition. Go price a new Fender dreadnaught hardshell case (today), subtract $40 for used in excellent condition. You STILL come up with a higher price than I was asking.
Even dropped it to $250 for a while...to no avail. Hence the "out of the blue" trade.

My question is: Why are these folks (in my opinion) setting the "used" bar so freaking low on Reverb? And; why do people (when researching current/past selling prices) NOT factor in the added 'shipping' cost?
i.e.- Someone selling a guitar for $179.99 plus $60 shipping, you come up with nearly $240 and you take your chances on what you're getting because you never physically handled the product nor visibly inspected it AND you have to wait a minimum of 3 days for it to arrive---yet all people ever seem to see is the initial $179.99.

I was offering the product at $275 ($250 for a while), and it would have been HANDS ON, and YOURS THE SAME DAY.

A lot of ignorant people out there, is my observation.

Ok....rant over. I got a great amp (with owners manual, 4 button foot switch, and a Fender instrument cable) in my studio, rather than a 12 string acoustic I never played.

I hear ya White Dog. Times have changed, and there’s plenty of stock available that people would rather unload or keep because, for the most part, it’s a buyers’ market except in some cases where it is difficult to find yet alone buy collectables that were often not priced with common knowledge by the seller.

Buying or selling has become a game with a little bit of luck. Supply and demand is even a tougher event here in Canada due to having approximately a tenth of the players that you have in the States.

Boy! Do I know about add on pricing with shipping and what not. I guess in your case it’s like the lady who will spend more at a department store in order to save that 10%.

I have the Mustang IV too. It’s not the be all and end all, but I think you’ll get great enjoyment from it. It works for me. Without being full frequency, and when not using the Strat, I find the acoustic works pretty good with it for general use (as suggested to me by an award winning guitarist). Modeling can be a beneficial tweak in this area as opposed to, perhaps, an amp that is voiced otherwise (with the exception of an acoustical amp).

Have great times with your new addition.

Congratulations on your new Ampeg, Glenn and congratulations on your new pedal, Alex. May you enjoy the great sounds for a long time. :)

Thanks, I like the 2x12 configuration of this cab, and it being a 4 ohm, over an 8 ohm.

I know what you mean with trying to sell your gear. If I buy a piece of gear, it's almost like I'm getting a tattoo, since I never can seem to get rid of it, if I want to down the road, and I'm stuck with it. :P

Congrats on the new amp. 8)

I wouldn't mind an 8 ohm 2 x 12" bass cab, so I could run it with the 18" cab. The Orange also has switchable impedance, which means I can put the full power (actually it's 900 watts instead of the 1000, not like that extra 100 is going to make or break me at that point) in either impedance setting by a flick of a switch. I just have to remember to have it on the proper setting depending on the cabs I'm using. It would be a no no to have it set for 8 ohms and having 4 ohms of cabs loaded into it.

I can see where you'd be doing good with an 8 ohm, to do different combinations of cabs.

Yeah, I think it's good to have versatile options available. You never know what you might need for an occasion, and sometimes it's not practical to haul a monster stack of cabs, fun as that may be. :P

For me not hauling mine around, the 4 ohm cab is great. And I'm getting the full 500 watts from the Bassman.

It's about as much as it's going to be moved, and that's it.

Believe it or not, I'm actually looking forward to moving my cabs. I can't wait to get out there again and play.

Is Yorick going with you? If so, maybe he could help you with the cabs.
