I remember you having that Ampeg for a little bit. I think I might have some GAS for it from time to time, but my Orange does the job, as far as ridiculous wattage goes. Probably the only advantage the Ampeg would have is the additional EQ features that the Orange does not have, and the Ampeg tone, if you really like that sort of thing, which can be cool. Other than that, not much point in it for me, at least.

Why did you get rid of the Super Bassman head, anyhow? Was it just too heavy to mess with, or you had to deal with bills again and had to downsize? I know the amp isn't cheap, that's for sure. It's almost $2000 for it, isn't it?

A combination of weight, and some bills. It just made more sense for me to use a combo anyway. They run about $1,800. Before the sales tax kicks it up to about $1,926., depending on which county in FL you live in, and the amount of that counties sales tax.

Yeah, it's still cheaper than an Orange bass head or that Heritage Ampeg, though. If I was to get a tube head like that, I'd think I'd go with the Fender, not to knock the Orange, but it has an extra 100 watts (the Orange is 200 watts,) and Fenders usually have pretty decent clean sound to them, I think. I'll bet that and a 2 x 15" cab (or 4 x 12" cab, if you really want to get old school) would shake some walls.

With the older style cab configurations, the Super Bassman would be a monster.

Oh yeah, I'll bet, especially those fridge sized ones. 8 x 10"s, 2 x 15"s, 4 x 12"s, or 4 x 15"s, if you really want to get freaky. I love those cabs, just don't ask me to try and get it upstairs to the rehearsal room. :P

The 2X15 Sunn cabs were extraordinary, as were the Hiwatt. The older Bassman cabs would probably do well with a Super Bassman also. And I can't omit the Kustom 2X15 cabs. The Kustoms were the most under rated of any of the cabs at that time.

Plus, they were pretty cool looking, I think. 8) What I find strange with the Fender amps from back then, is the Showman seemed to be a better bass amp than the Bassman did. It was at least 80 watts with the older ones, and had a 2 x 15" sealed cab with JBL's. The older Bassman had 50 watts and a smaller, 2 x 12" speaker cab. I suppose a lot of bassists used the Showman a lot more over the Bassman, or I'd think I would. I don't know what the cost difference would be, since that also can factor in the decision.

The Fender amps did seem to be crossed up for their purposes back then. The Bassman was under powered, and expensive. That's why Jim Marshall used the basic Bassman design for his infamous, Marshall, mountains of sound. A good design, just under powered. Then the Sunns, Ampegs, and all the rest of the power monsters appeared.

Then Fender came out with the 400PS, which was a total monster with 435 tube watts. I suppose they did catch up with that. I've understood the Bassman does pretty well for studio work, though. I never played through one, but have seen them in shops, the 60's ones, that is.

It didn't have the support to keep it on the market. There were just to many other amps that were getting a following. Just a bit to late for it, and SS was more convenient to handle with the wattage getting up there too.

That's true. Gallien Kruger already had an amp out in the late 60's, which I do believe Santana used at Woodstock. That technology was on it's way, after ironing out some bugs, earlier on. Now, they have stuff you never would have imagined back then, I'm sure. Stuff like 200 watt heads that fit in your back pocket, and that's considered low powered these days. It wasn't back then, that's for sure.

That pretty much summed it up too, Paul.

I suppose if they came out with it a couple of years prior, it might have helped, but then again, it could have also been a matter of promotion, too. I don't know how CBS was with the promotion part of Fender.

You're right about the promotion factor of the product.
