It should be noted that, although not always stock, similar aftermarket automated tuners are now available for most major brand guitars including Strats and Teles.

Last Thursday I received my new 2017 Gibson SG Standard HP heritage cherry from Sweetwater. The guitar and case are perfect. There are no dents, scraps, scratches or manufacturing defects of any kind. Sweewater set it up beautifully. All I had to do was tune it and, with GForce, I simply pushed one button and strummed once. I had to laugh as the tuner knobs turned by themselves. To my ears, it sounded perfect but I checked it with my Korg tuner plugged into the output jack and it was spot on. This guitar is a pleasure to play and I haven't been able to put it down. :D

Sounds pretty cool. 8) I know a lot of people complained about having that automatic tuner, but I think it's pretty clever. I wish I had that, since that would save a lot of time.

Thanks Paul. This is my first experience with automatic tuning. I think a real benefit is its ability to change to an alternate tuning very quickly. It has a bunch of tunings stored in memory and you can add your own. I'm having fun playing with it. I hope this link works to pictures.

Pictures worked!

Beautiful, Marky. Great looking case too.
I too would be happy to change the tuning with that little robot. I have quite a few song books like the Stones with Drop D tuning. Of course others exist.

Happy for ya bro'.

I've seen those online, somewhere, awhile back. I think it might even be the same company that makes the ones for Gibson, but I'm not sure.

That's the thing that appeals to me the most about that tuner. You could just automatically tune to an Open G, or whatever else you want to tune to. I imagine that would especially be handy for slide players, who often use those tunings a lot.

I could see the pics, by the way. Nice looking guitar. 8)

I agree, Paul. It may even allow one to bring fewer guitars to their gig. These are the tunings that are programmed into it: Standard, DADGAD, Whole Step, Drop D, E Flat, Double Drop D, Open E, Open A, Open D, Open G, Dobro and All 4ths. Then there are six user programmable memory slots as well.

I suppose the sky's the limit with the possibilities. You have it figured out how to program it, or you're just messing with the presets?

I'm messing with the presets. I just looked at the manuals and they don't show how to program your own tunings. It gives the link: http://www.gibson.com/GForce for more information. So I just went to the website and downloaded the whole manual. It's for 2016 so I guess there were no changes in 2017.

You guys are right. Tronical makes Gibson's GForce system and it can be easily added to most guitars. Here's their website: https://www.tronicaltune.com/

That appears to be the case as Marky pointed out. Thanks, Marky.

There are other videos and other guitars with the robotic tuner and this, in a nutshell, is one with the originator FYI:

I don't believe equivalent bass tuners are available - yet.

In the following, and again with other video and robotic examples (including, robotic musicians) they didn't replace the keys with robotics, they replaced the bass player!

Looks like drum machines aren't the only present and future for the music industry. That performance was kinda boring though. Don't expect me to go to the concert. Besides those machines can't sing and dance.8)

Cool videos, FSB. That bass machine is an interesting toy but it has no mojo, brother. Not for me either. I hope that is not the direction music is taking. You would know far better than I do about whether that's the case. Say it ain't so.

Well, that's a good question, Marky. It's how crappy drum machines and keyboards evolved. Even superstars have embraced the new age tools (even if only as a supplement) for concerts these days. Less musicians. fewer rehearsals, assured consistency and availability, no surprises = more profit and less cost at some expense. Today's audience has reduced their demands, expectations, and mediocrity often becomes the norm.

In studios, not only poor or inexperienced singers, but excellent new and aging vocalists are using vocal electronics like Auto-Tune for pitch correction in order to save work, time, and money. Now studios can prevent the loss of what could have been, and now is, a perfect take. Robotic tuners have a great place in the studio too IMHO. Although, in certain recording circumstances, I might want to cross check with a professional tuner for total assurance. YMMV.

Add to the fact that today's audience is changing. Flashing lights in a club with repetitive lyrics or no lyrics where subwoofers rule, and 160 BPM coming from a DJ in a costume in front of video screens with computer animation is catching on like a wildfire out of control. Even Country music is changing.

If someone could invent a rap machine that could juggle words and phrases (I'll bet Big Blue could) I believe that would find a market. Never say never.

Thankfully, there are the rest of us. It's all good as long as we share the stage. - for now.

Ah . . . back to the bass toy:

Okay. There was the projection, the light show, the player piano and drum machine were on holiday, the DJ was asleep
backstage, and the bass machine was showing off. But, did you see and hear the performance of a real guitarist? Pretty awesome, huh ? :D
FSB

Compared to sampling the bass machine has that wonderful analog tone; but, don't worry that it's going to take over. Storing and transporting it is a problem. :P

The lady guitar player played beautifully and one thing I like about the bass machine is that it is analog and has a real sound to it. Time marches on and I am constantly amazed and reminded of that by the exponentially increasing speed at which new or improved products are being released. Maybe soon a six string lead or rhythm or classical guitar machine will be unveiled. I don't want to sound like an old guy with his feet stuck in the mud. I do enjoy progress and innovation very much and I try to keep an open mind to everything but, at heart, I guess I'm just an analog man like Joe Walsh.

I'm like you, Marky. Having worked in a technological field, I am leary of accepting new things at times, but also very open to them. Thinking outside the box fills our lives with all sorts of possibilities and wonderments. My experience is that the old works very well with the new. Transference of skills can be beneficial. Often the knowledge and hands on of the original can lead to well thought out and better executed application in the new discovery or journey.

Just think of the analog possibilities when a function is applied precisely at a faster rate or in a way that is humanely impossible. We have that in percussive instrumentation now. For a drummer, that's hard to swallow . . . but, it is what it is. Nuances and mojo may not be present in the same way, and yet other factors will come about.

That concept is out there for all instruments; but, like classic cars, classic sound and performance will have a place. Maybe, in a museum, but I won't live to see that.

Rock on Joe Walsh. :D
