Mr. Nylon,
Not being a Bass guy, I have a probably uneducated ?. Does Fender offer a totally clean fretless board; no fret lines or one w/ markers and no lines that's not from the CS? I think it would look better w/o fret lines and w/ markers. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't make a difference to the way it plays.

Nice! Definitely Jazz, but I also see hints of Rock 'N Roll. Those black strings you added give it that extra BaNg! Enjoy! :D

I forgot how playing a Fretless feels so effortless for me. I do like them more than Fretted basses.

Fender does have the Tony Franklin Fretless Precision with no fret lines on the board. It does have side dot markers. It's also a PJ with both a Precision pup, and a Jazz pup onboard.

Yes, that's the picture I have in my head of a fretless bass. Crazy Fender doing unnecessary work, so what are the fret slots filled with then, maple strips? Seems like they would know how many they were going to make and omit cutting slots just to fill them.
So from what I gather the neck feel/speed, player touch dynamics/nuance is the biggest draw from a players perspective.
Appreciate the Bass info.
Is it the one or is it to soon to tell, I know you like to swap'em?

This one does seem to be a good one.

I put a down payment on a Helix.
The more thought and planning I put into the "ultimate" pedal board I was working to create the more I realize I'll never find enough floor space or have the back to move it to get every sound I like in one board.
Gonna sell off most of those midi gadgets I had started collecting and keep a simpler, more basic board for a second (spare) board and use a helix.
The helix sounds pretty good.
Digital fx have come a long way.
I tried one last winter and was pretty impressed.
Impressed enough it's a big part of the reason I started second guessing myself with that ultimate board project.
Will post pix when it comes in.
Gonna be an expensive experiment but I'm diving in head first.

The good news is that the custom pedal board case I had made for me will fit the helix pretty much perfectly with some extra room for a few "specialty" pedals not covered by the helix, like a B9 for starters.

I picked up the Helix today while I was in the city.
I have a busy weekend planned and likely won't get to taking pix or trying it out until Monday.
Look for pix and some initial impressions from me in a few days.

Well, I opened the box this morning and connected it all up.
I have not yet read a single word in the manual.
I'm just going by feel.
Real men don't ask for directions, right?

Since I'm learning by trial and error it's likely taking me longer than it might otherwise take to learn how to navigate the menus but I find that's a better way for initial learning, for me at least.
When I can't find what I'm looking for I will go to the manual.

I spent about an hour trying to get a usable Marshall crunchy hard driving rock rhythm tone.
Think Black Crowes, Four Horsemen, etc.
I will work on a soaring lead tone after.
I am by no means finished with this patch but at least I got it usable.
Line 6 may have come a long ways since I had an AX2-212 but they still haven't learned the fundamental rule of hard rock tone, which is, less is usually more.
The preset was WAY over the top in terms of pretty much everything.
The preamp gain was set to 7.5.
I reduced it to 5.5 and then to 3.0 and it's still a bit too much.
Incements are by 0.1.
I will likely end up around 2.2 or 2.3.
Maybe even less since I decided it sounded better with the bias cranked up.
I hope it doesn't also model blown tubes from running them so hot.

It might be hard to see in the pick but the icon that looks a little like an amp head represents the amp model and it it highlighted.
When you push down (into the board) on the joystick (cursor wheel thingy) it goes into the edit mode for that selection.
Pushing the joystick side to side or up/down navigates in those directions.
The knobs along the bottom make your adjustments.

I found it interesting that you can adjust things like bias and sag within each amp model.
Hum and ripple are still meaningless to me.
I may have to break down and read the manual after all.
There are cabinet models and effect models as well as mic models and a few other things I'm not yet sure of.
My Ax2-212 had those as well but there are far more of them on this unit and the adjustments go much deeper, just like the amp model.

Image

In terms of tone, when I first tried this preset I'm working on I was disappointed and feared I may have spent a bunch of money on an expensive toy.
The preset was loaded with a Tube Screamer cranked pretty hard, a couple of 412 cabinets, some moderate delay, some moderate reverb and a chorus that was also about medium.
It sounded pretty fake and thin and lifeless.
With my previous experience with Line 6 I knew my first task was to either remove a bunch of stuff altogether or crank it way down.
It is very much improved now and I am hopeful it will just get better as I learn how to dial that crap out of it.
I don't know enough about it yet to know if I have addressed everything but I think I've got it all shut off.
Basically I've got a Marshall head running through a 1x12 closed back cab and a 1x8 open back Tweed cab.
That's why the progression line splits into two there in the middle.

Between the guitar icon and the amp icon there is a volume icon and room to the right of it for two more items before the amp.
I will figure out at a later date if I can squeeze in more than two.
The volume model uses the treadle in this case but you can assign the treadle to various functions and you can also add more treadles.

As I said earlier, in the first few moments I wasn't sure if this was going to work out for me but I am now hopeful that with my experience I'll be able to get some killer tones out of it.
The amp model does sound much better than my previous one.
The tone cleans up about as you would expect with a volume roll-off on a real amp and the dynamics of the model seem much more true to life.
