One thing I learned on the road, gear gets changed out. I think if I wasn't a roadie that handled so much gear, I'd be more attached to gear. After a while they become just pieces to be moved from here, to there.

I wish I was able to move it like you can, that way I wouldn't have been stuck with the bad decisions I made when I got certain things. At least that now I'm older, I've learned not to do stuff so impulsively. At least, I hope I have. :P

I try to get that moving gear mentality out of my head. I'll see how I do with my current pieces.

What do you think is the longest you've ever held onto a bass?

I had a Gibson EB-0 for about 6 years.

They are just tools to get the job done....unless you're a collector or they have some memorable value to you.

You got that right, Mike. It's sort of like fishing. Some of us might have a favourite fishing lure while others will work fine or not at all. In the hands of the wrong person they can be useless. Still others are simply memorable or collectable like you mentioned. :D FSB

We're all different, but for me, I need to stick with gear for a good long while in order to make progress. The first few weeks or months is just getting to know it well enough to get back to the level I am on with familiar gear. Only then can I proceed and get better.

Whether it's guitars, woodworking tools, girlfriends, computers or otherwise, flipping them quickly doesn't lead me to improving, nor to taking full advantage of what they can offer.

YMMV

I hear ya, arthl.

Incidentally, as for memorable and collectable, I still have an antique fishing plug that my great uncle gave me to catch my first fish. :D

Good memories! My grandfather taught me to hammer out lures from a copper coin, and I wish I had kept them!

I do have an old small lead sink on one of my Telecasters, to dampen the g string ringing above the headstock. It used to be a cigarette filter, but that's out these days, so I visited the tackle box. (Is lead even allowed these days?)

Your post was a welcome and interesting one arthl. Nice to have that special attachment to your grandfather. I never got to meet mine as they died before I was born, but I'm okay with that because I had terrific uncles.

That's interesting about the coins, and the Tele, and a good question about lead. In this neck of the woods, and many areas that I know of, for the most part with regulations that vary with confusion, lead generally has not been permitted for some time. I suspect it is even more likely to be frowned upon where fish stocking is in effect.

Cheers!

My guitar herd is much more stable now than it used to be.
For the most part I have pretty much "arrived" at where I want to be and there isn't much that tempts me anymore.
At least not when it comes to the main players in that game, like Fender, Gibson, PRS, etc.
The Ric may have awakened some dormant gas-like symptoms but I think I've got a reasonably good handle on it.
My flirtation with the idea of a 'Malcolm Young' shaped Gretsch has passed.

Amps and pedals are a different story.
I still do quite a bit of experimentation on both of those fronts.
Pedals, more so than amps.

My f/x quest may never be over.
I think there's way more action in the R&D aspect of that world.

My amp herd is now pretty close to where I want it to be as well.
There are things that tempt me but they are usually priced such that I have to think twice before I take the plunge.

I think for the immediate future my focus will likely be on upgrading some of my P/A gear.
I'm going meet a guy to take a look at a better crossover tomorrow that I found on KiJiJi.
I upgraded one of my power amps last year.
Still have to find some money for upgrading the second.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

The wallet took an unexpected hit last year and priorities are just that - priorities.

But, I still have some gear savings in reserve (just not as much as I would like). My only concern is do I get a new acoustic, better amp, or more useful and better digital mixer? Time will tell; but, I'll wait till summer when things settle down in the market, and I'll spend more time to research my needs over my GAS, unless, the guitar gods hit me with a lightning bolt forcing me in a direction that lights up my life.

I haven't downloaded any photos yet but last week , I went to Guitar Center and ended up buying a brand new, Fender FA-100 Acoustic which came with the gig bag. Not a bad deal for only $120.00 . I did clean the fretboard, adjust the truss , and install a new, Bone saddle which made a huge difference. Seems to do well with Martin 11 SP's on it.

Nice! Have good times with it, Jeff. :D
