 Look at the bright side. You’ll probably need a tuneup by then.

Oddly enough, I've found bass strings a lot easier on my fingers than guitar strings.

I can believe that. Those little metal strings can get sharp as they are pressed.

 I actually did go to the low side of town, and I crossed the tracks since they’re all over town. :P Had to (Get that? “Had to” hahaha) go to the store, and there was a mint used Epiphone Viola Bass hanging on the wall. I didn’t have time to plug in, but I did give it a go unplugged. For a Chinese bass I have to say I was impressed at the finish and quality overall at the price of under $500. A steal in this country. A little fret buzz, but my guess is that it could have be set up better to fix that. It wasn’t terribly heavy, but it did surprise me with a little more weight than I expected for it’s size, and I found sitting down it was comfortable. With no strap I couldn’t say how it is when standing for some time; but, I’m sure it’s fine, unlike the Gibby back breakers or the heavy hitters out there. All in all that little bass is very nice fellas. :D
Aside from what I’ve read, I know little about playing this or any other bass, and yet, in no time, here I was playing that Beatles clone. Nice! I thought I’d be completely out in left field, but “Eureka!”, unlike with my uncle’s crazy tuned Fender steel/Hawaiian lap guitar, and with my ability to play by ear, here I was making music instead of disjointed sounds. Lookee that! Except for octave change, tuning is similar to the guitar. Oh happy day. :D
I didn’t jump on that Viola though because there are a few other considerations I have in mind, but now that I’ve made this new discovery my interest is tweaked, and bass is added to my bucket list, although at my age and for recording only it isn’t major. I can rent a bass, but have decided that the Viola is a worthy popular candidate, and I’ve narrowed down the Precision over the Jazz for my use unless my hands on tells me otherwise. There’s more to try and learn, such as how short scale would affect me with string purchase yada yada, and if the tone is something that fits for my music. I did read up on it, and youse guys have been an encyclopedia of knowledge as others have.

Now I get why bass players dance around (unlike Pino Palladino), and put on a Verdine White show with those 4 or 5 strings when the six and twelve string dudes walk with a grimace in their face, except for the stage jumpers, That’s what ya get for being in the pocket. :P
If you’re into Jazz or bass of any kind, old tunes aside, you might want to check out one of my faves, “The Judge” Milt Hinton “The Dean of American jazz players” if you haven’t yet. You might want to take a chair if you want to read his extensive resume including who’s who of whos. :D

That's interesting, Paul. I thought it would be the other way around. I have to give bass a try. :)

Bass strings can be easy, or hard on the fingers, depending on the type of strings, and how hard you press them down. I know I sure like restringing basses over 6 stringers. Image

I’m looking forward to hearing how you set up and how you like your new N4s, Mike. I’m betting the N4s are a great step forward from the N3s which I have. Although not perfect, and not to everyone’s taste, the N3s are still pretty good in their own right, and they have a following. I have no doubt the N4s will find their sweet spot of acceptance too.

Enjoy your new N4s, Mike.

Not yet, Mark. I'm in upstate NY for a few more days. Will probably wait until after the new year
and we're back home.

Happy 2020!!!
