A good choice on the Hercules stand.

Thanks. I use their single stands for gigs too.

I use their singles as well.

They're not cheap, but durable for our pricey instruments, imo.

Heritage w/P90s, Les Paul, Homebrew Tele, Fender Strat & Fender Tele.

The others stay in cases until I need them and that reminds me. The air is getting very dry now. If you haven't already done so, now that the central heat is on for the winter (at least in northern US climes), it is time to humidify your acoustic instruments. Ideally, they should kept in the closed case when not in use. Remember that instruments are comfortable in the same conditions that humans are. Cold, heat and humidity should be considered. Cheaper than repairing cracks!
Good reminder, Mike. I just installed a whole house humidifier. The humidity sits around 30-35 but often drops to 25 It’s not a perfect system with fluctuations. A few weeks ago it would hover at 35 to 40 with inconsistency, but some stability, and this is pretty common with up and downstairs and outside temps amongst other things. Outside probes are possible, but they have a high failure rate in performance, environment and placement varies, so I opted out.

My guitars are cased but now I need some new humidipaks. They expire quicker in these winter conditions as you alluded to. I was hoping the new humidifier would help, and it does, especially for me, but it’s not an exact science, and what’s good for the guitars is not the best for the house knowing that 40 - 50 is preferable for acoustics. My hard wood maple floors are a good indicator too. Individual humidifiers won’t work for us so, as restricted as it is, the new humidifier is an improvement and cases are, unfortunately, the name of the day. :P
Without taking sides on the Climate change choices, I believe there has been a change that affected guitars here in Winnipeg and elsewhere.

My inexpensive old 12 string solid wood guitar could sit out in the winter day after day with no related tuning problems and never a fret job. Not so with the Strat that had much needed
fretwork a few years ago; although, it came with frets that could have been shaved better from the get go but it was minor then. I’m thinking this noticeable shrinkage and fret overhang happens more with a humidity affected rolled fretboard? I doubt if that 12 string would be as stable today with roller coaster weather changes. Maybe it would. Hey! Even I’ve changed and dried out over the years.

From the web, so consider the source, but I agree with most :

"Dry air and low humidity are responsible for the lion’s share of guitar problems…particularly with acoustic guitars. Cracking fingerboards, splitting tops, protruding fret ends, shrinking fingerboards and braces becoming loose are among the most common problems. Even electric guitars can suffer from low humidity, causing the neck to warp and the fret ends to protrude.

Most manufacturers recommend maintaining the humidity for a guitar at about 45%. Keeping your home at that humidity level would be nearly impossible but you can create a micro-environment for your guitar inside the guitar case. You should always keep your guitar in the case rather than on a guitar stand. Not only can you maintain the humidity level easier but it protects against bumps and possibly knocking the guitar over requiring a costly repair. There are several types of guitar humidifiers on the market and one usually works as well as another but the important thing is to keep it moist and check it often. If it is dry, re-moisten it. If it is still moist, put it back in and check it the next day. You can over-humidify a guitar so be sure to let the humidifier dry out before you recharge it. "

All good points about humidity, Mike. One day I’ll have to investigate how that store with Canada’s largest guitar wall amongst other gear including drums and what not, managed their humidity. However, they do it, I’m sure my pocket book can’t afford it

I’ve used the wet sponge method, silica gel dessicant and now my preference humidipaks. These all do the job, but I find the humidipaks at a cost are a nice easy clean time saving solution that won’t over do nor under do the job as long as they aren’t at the hockey puck stage. You might get a little more mileage by bending them back and forth to somewhat of a powder stage which may last a short while longer (better than none). I don’t think buying those paks are economical for the collector with many guitars though.

There are ways to keep a check of
your guitar humidity in the case, and even wirelessly, such as Taylor does with a change of your battery pack/output jack. Accessories are available in this arena.

I have yet to check the actual humidity level in the family room downstairs; but, just when I was about to replace paks in the acoustic case, I found my existing ones to have held up better than I thought with this weather. I was expecting them to be bone dry considering the age of them. It seems the new home humdifier at 25 - 35 % is helping that gig bag to do it’s job. Nice! :D

Note: Not only can humidity or lack of cause a problem with your instrument’s woodwork, but because there are many kinds of glue used, separation and/or movement of components are at risk without care and attention. This, of course, depends on the gear and environment.

Cool. 8) I find those clip on tuners work rather well, and a lot more convenient to use than a plug in tuner.

You know, I've noticed that the D'Addario version isn't as thick of a gauge than say the Rotosound ones, but I don't know how much of the wrapping there is with the actual string section with each of those. You'd have to take both of those apart, I guess to find that out. I forget what the gauges of the other brands are with the nylon strings, though. I know Fender has some, and La Bella. I think GHS, too.

I know La Bella has a set of Nylons that is the same gauge as the D'Addario ETB92 Nylon Series are. La Bella are decent Nylon strings too.

Yeah, I've heard that they are. I've never had the opportunity to try out the brand. I know they have a specific set for the Hofner violin bass, which I thought might be of interest with my violin bass, but they are kind of pricey, too. AMS does carry those.
