I went all out, broke the bank, and bought some new Phosphor Bronze Nanoweb HD Light Acoustic Guitar Strings 13-53 for a setup with the acoustic yesterday. Funny how 13 gauge is light with acoustics, but not with electrics.

I think you will enjoy your new strings. I have them (same gauge) on my acoustic and find that they feel great and have a warm and crisp tone. They last a very long time too. Enjoy!

Out of curiosity, have any of you ever put electric guitar strings on an acoustic?

Yes. It wasn't me but a friend did it.
The feel was significantly softer, almost to the point of being unplayable and the tone was a bit wonky.
The biggest difference, besides a much lower and buzzy action, was a noticeable drop in volume.
I don't recommend it.

Actually, Marky, the Taylor came stock with Elixirs. They are fine as you mentioned, but I have thought of testing out other brands (as I have with the electrics). I’m sure the characteristics would be quite different, but one never knows what you’ll get with subtle changes especially with different or rebranded strings often using the same wire source. Perhaps, someone else has done so with their Taylor with good results?

As for using electric strings on my acoustics, can’t say that I have. Prior to the Taylor I had a 12 string and acoustic wire all the way. However, as a young sprout, I had a small mahogany Framus loaded with nylon, and a Jumbo Western all maple guitar (the name of which I never paid attention to or recall - my mistake. It was just known as my guitar). I lived in the country far from a music store and strings. When I could get them, Black Diamond strings (a 128 year old company today) were popular with the Maritimers; but, whether mine were specifically acoustic or electric I really can’t say. They were simply known to the kid as strings. That was a great question, Paul.

I suppose the reverse could be similarly thrown out there. Any acoustic strings on electrics out there?

Thanks for the vids, FSB.
I'm pretty sure my friend put 9s (electric) on his acoustic and as you can see, the results from the video pretty closely mirrored my impressions.
Softer feel, buzzy action and lower volume.
I was a little surprised when the reviewer said they sounded almost the same but a tad warmer.
My impression was that the tone was too far off to be desirable.
I may conduct my own empirical research on this and try to find a set of nickel in a more appropriate gauge.
My Taylor 814 has a lovely warm, round tone but my 214 has that brighter tone that many folks find to be not quite what they're after.
I might try some nickel on the 214 just to see for myself if it warms it up any.
If it loses any snap or spank I will not like that but I guess only by trying will I find out for sure.
The one thing that concerns me is hardness and I will have to research that.
The reviewer said the nickel lasts longer but he didn't say why, at least not enough to my satisfaction.
I wouldn't want to increase fret wear.
Something tells me nickel must be much harder than copper but I'll check just to be sure.
If I do the experiment I will find this thread and post my findings.
It won't be for a while though as I am preparing to leave for a summer holiday in a few days.

I’m. glad that the videos were of interest, Matt. I recall you having that nice Taylor.

I don’t know if I would chance the strings that could add damage to the frets or possibly nut, etc. I do know that I would consider questionable similar coated or uncoated Phospher Bronze strings in different gauges (also light to heavy) from Elixir and other manufacturers such as D’Addario and so on. Fender makes a 13 set, but with a ball end.

There’s a lot to choose from amongst similar strings on the Taylor, so you might consider those. Maybe you’ll find a new mojo. I won’t be doing it until the next string replacement. But it’s a consideration albeit the present acoustic strings cost more than my preferred electrics. :P
If you do try something other than stock, let us know how you made out bro’.

Cheers!

My bucker harness for the Ric arrived today.
Great timing to be a total tease.
I leave tomorrow for my summer vacation.
Oh well.
At least I have a reason to look forward to coming home.

FYI,
I had an Ampeg PF-500.
It was not reliable.
It broke down on me twice within the initial warranty period so I sold it after the second repair was done under warranty to prevent having to pay for the third one as there were only a few weeks left of warranty.
The second time it failed on me was on stage.

I forget what the problem was with mine but as I recall there were a number of issues with that amp.
I think I'd look into it if I were you, Glenn.

I returned the PF-500 for a Hartke TX600. The PF is starting to have a heating issue that that can't pin down. So, the PF is outa' here.

I can't say I blame you with that one. That's too bad, though. It seemed like a decent amp, otherwise.

True, but it wasn't just warm. It worked out better in the long run. The Hartke TX600 is a fine head. For the same price. Image
