So after 20 years with my last wireless, a Samson, I broke down and got a new Line 6, G30 system. Our guitarist has had one for a couple years and has had nothing but good luck with it so seemed a good choice. And yes, I realize that my old wireless was probably in the FCC "not good" list but I didn't give that too much thought. It was just proving to be unreliable so time to bite the bullet.

And while I was at it I decided now was a good time to "up" my vocal mic as well. I've been using my stand by SM58 for over 15 years. My vocals are quieter than the other members and I need to boost my gain considerably. So this time I went with a Shure Beta 87A. This should help me boost my gain while avoiding feedback and make mixing a little easier.

Merry Christmas to me, and goodbye to several hundred dollars. :D

Cool the Beta 87A is my first choice of wireless mics, been using them for years much smother than the 58 and with a Beta you get more gain before feed back
Merry Christmas

I never got to check out the Beta 87A , but I have a Beta 58A and it is a world apart from a regular 58.

I have an old Beta 58, what is the difference between it and a Beta 58A?

Absolutely any Shure Beta will get you more gain before feedback,
Beta 87A has a polar pattern that is extremely uniform at all frequencies.
The Beta 58 A is a Dynamic cartridge with supercardioid polar pattern
The BETA 87A is a supercardioid; the BETA 87C is a cardioid. The 87C was introduced for performers using in-ear monitors. In brief, a cardioid mic is often preferred by in-ear monitor users as it sounds more "natural" with the in-ear mix.
Beta 87A
Type Condenser (electret bias)
Frequency Response 50 to 20,000 Hz
Polar Pattern Supercardioid
Phantom power required? Phantom Supply Requirement: 11 to 52 Vdc, positive at both pins 2 and 3, Current Drain: 1.0 to 1.2 mA
Beta 87C
Receiver Type Condenser (electret bias)
Frequency Response 50 to 20,000 Hz
Polar Pattern Cardioid
Phantom power required? Phantom Supply Requirement: 11 to 52 Vdc, positive at both pins 2 and 3, Current Drain: 1.0 to 1.2 mA
If you use floor monitors, the BETA 87A may be a better choice as it will often provide a bit more gain before feedback than the BETA 87C. However, which model works better for you can only be decided via auditioning the mics.
Beta 58 A
Type Dynamic (moving coil)
Frequency Response 50 to 16,000 Hz
Polar Pattern Supercardioid, rotationally symmetrical about microphone axis, uniform with frequency.
Output Level Open Circuit Voltage: -51.5 dBV/Pa* (2.6 mV) *1 Pa = 94 dB SPL

The Beta 58A has a completely new cartridge in it. While the new cartridge is meant to mimic the old cartridge as far as polar pattern, output level, and frequency response goes, it is a different cartridge and will sound slightly different. Two major differences are that Shure removed the hum bucking coil on the new model and added an output transformer.

I'm setting up a home studio and I received my first goodie box from Sweetwater yesterday. I was busy today and didn't open anything up yet but here is what I got:

My mic was back ordered but it shipped today so I'll have it next week. :D

You’re off to a good start, Marky. Sometimes it’s the little things that make a big difference. :D
Enjoy and remember it starts with a song.

Lots of good info on the mic. The 87a that I got is not the wireless model, since I'm playing bass it's not a necessity for a wireless vocal mic.

I've only had the chance to plug it in and verify it works at home, seems like a winner but Sat 12/30 will be the first "real world" test at a gig.

The wireless on my bass allows me to be mobile and check out the front of house sound while playing, because I run our sound in our 3 pc group as well. I chose the Line 6 wireless based on the almost 3 years of reliable service out guitarist has had with his. I set mine to Ch 6, he sets on Ch 1, no muss, no fuss, no interference and all is right with the world.

Have a great Christmas guys! If you aren't "into" Christmas enjoy whatever holiday is relevant to you! Rock on!

Yes indeed. I've got a couple of songs written down and a few others rolling around in my head like marbles.

Thanks Glenn. I've been installing drivers and changing some settings in Win10 but I need my mic to finish the setup. It's on its way. :D

My Fender Hot Rod Pro Junior III just showed up this morning! In fact I just unboxed it, and I'm typing this as I let it acclimate to room temperature; then I shall plug and play.
I always get a nice Christmas bonus where I work...and of course most of it goes to bills (such is life), but I always make sure I get a nice toy for myself as well---and this year it's a great "no frills" 15 watt tube amp to ABY split with my Blues Junior.
Merry Christmas all!

Congrats, White Dog.

A Christmas bonus is a great thing to have. Sure adds a smile to the face.

I used to work where each employee got $100 for every year they worked. Needless to say we were delighted and the old timers were ecstatic at a time when $100 was even more valuable than today. With a change in ownership that perk was gone

But, then a new competitive company started up and a lot of us started that one up from day one. They immediately got the telecasting rights to cover the NHL games, and each year we worked the average of 12 to 18 hour games that not only paid double time, but triple time as well. That was how we got our toys then. The problem was we were either had no time or we were too tired to enjoy them until hockey season ended.
Have a great time with your new Hot Rod Pro Junior III. You’ve earned it.
