Sometimes the Epiphone counterparts are very decent. I believe they had a model like this a couple of years back. Maybe there are a few new ones still around???

With the price hike Gibson has had lately, and removing the good pickups from the cheaper models starting last year, Epiphones have become more attractive, and used ones even for their parts. Why pay $300 for a set of pickups when you can buy a whole guitar with the exact same pickups for the same price?

you speak much truth wise man. I am pretty impressed with what I'm pulling off the racks in the mom and pop place in town. for example, take a look at a Epi 339 pro. Pretty solid feeling axe with good electronics, and you're out the door for around $400.

At least Gibson has come back down to earth a bit, removed the robo tuners, got rid of the zero fret, and took that hideous les paul 100 logo of the head-stocks. Not that I need another Gibson electric (have 5 already), but I had no interest in any thing they were pushing last year. Prices have come a bit back down to earth too. 2015 was NOT a good year for Gibson IMHO.

I'd say 2014 wasn't a good year either.
They had a great idea in 2013 with the LPJ and SGJ, where you could get a real Gibson with great pickups and full specs for everything except the finish for around $500. Too bad people thought LPJ and SGJ were juniors because of the "J" - they were more like a Special on steroids. In 2014, they were outfitted with cheaper pickups and a price hike. In 2015 they were gone completely.

I'm all for Tronical tuners. As long as they're optional, and not rebranded. And zeroth fret? Nah, but a brass nut or locking nut as an option is not a bad thing.

One great thing this year is that they have a 2016 Firebird that only costs $1100 street!

I think 2012 was probably the best year in the last few to be in the "market".

I bought an SG standard w/a Gibson hard case for $1,200.

these had the torrified maple fretboards, - thanks to the feds raid on the rosewood at Gibson -

many people hated the idea of this, (but not all that many still hated them after they tried them).

I have to say, this guitar is quite fantastic. Stock Pups are the 490r/498t which I happen to like (have a set in my 95 standard)

My brother inlaw scored a LP Trad. for under $1,699, which is simply a thing of beauty.

after that, prices went nutty, then 2015 came along and Gibson screwed the pooch with all these changes and another hefty price hike.

Good guitar, but I'm not sure I'd be willing to trade you even with my much cheaper 2013 SGJ (not to be confused with SG Jr), which was $500 with a Gibson USA SG HSC.
They're both USA models, and the hardware is mostly the same - same Nashville Tune-O-Matic bridge, same 300k/500k pots, same vintage Kluson tuners, same plek'd Corian nut, same neck pickup. The main difference being the bridge pup, where the SGJ has a 490T instead of the 498T.
Apart from the hardware, the SGJ has a maple neck with a rosewood fretboard, which is stiffer than the mahogany neck. And 24 frets. But no pickguard and no glossy finish.

I'm not sure the finish differences and one of the pickups being different is worth $700.

Yeah, I got one of those too (2011 or 2012). What a beast...

these were great options for people to get a Gibby SG, at less than half what the Standards at the time were fetching. I agree the lack of cosmetics would not make a diff in the way any of them play,

SGJ has dot inlays verses MOP trapezoid, no neck binding on these, no head stock crown inlay, and of course, a scaled down satin finish requiring less effort and material to apply. The cost differences are a reflection on the over detail work required in one verses another.

Doesn't make the SGJ an undesirable guitar, but the cost compare you make, just isn't all that realistic, there's more in play here than just the finish.
