Gibson made a SG Standard w/ P90s for 2012 & 2013. Looks like they are bringing the model back for 2016. My only real disappointment is that anything "Standard" should come with hardshell case. Price is currently $1200 (which is a little rich, especially considering the case). But - given the right sale - this might be my next guitar.

Nice guitar, but IMO that price is a bit much for that particular guitar. :?

If they knocked off a little from the price, that would be amazing...I love the smell of P90's in the morning!

That is a sweet guitar. Sadly, after that last massive across the board price increase i pretty much gave up completely on Gibson. I always loved the Les Paul design but now even the used market is just not worth the price. There are way too many other great guitars that are a bit more price conscious out there.

For four digits, it better be mother-of-pearl inlays, and not just plastic.

SGs are really nice, as long as you're careful with the headstock, and real P90s are not bad pickups at all. I was thinking of getting one of the below, but was not too thrilled with the SD pickups, that didn't sound like P90s.

I have one of the above. I don't know how the pups compare to P90's, but the SDs are nice sounding pups. I used it at a blues jam last week and got a lot of compliments. The Korean electronics are pretty much poo poo, so that may have colored your opinion of the guitar. I put in cts pots, orange drops, switchcraft input and 3 way and a new nut. It's now a solid guitar that can hold it's own against more expensive choices.

Oh, I'm sure the SP-90s are nice, but they are a bit different from Gibson P-90s, being ceramic and hotter wound. They are probably better for bass than a P-90, but didn't seem to give the bright and uncompressed treble associated with the alnico and lower ohm Gibsons.

As primarily a 5-finger-picker, I tend to favor pickups that have a more responsive treble, because the ring finger and pinky on the first string certainly has less attack than a pick. But that doesn't mean it's a bad pickup - it's just not as responsive for me in that way as a lower wound tele pickup or P90 with the volume higher.

I guess going up a string size or two and lowering the poles a bit might help, but when testing at GC, that's not an option :)

My son turned 15 last week, and had a fair bit of money gifted to him.
He added a bit of money from his savings, and went and bought this beauty.

The boy has good taste - it's a beautiful guitar :D

On the plus side, he won't have to worry about tuning, adjusting intonation or pickup height.
On the minus side, he won't learn how to adjust intonation or pickup height (but can still tune manually when the Tronical runs out of juice).

One great thing about the wraparound bridge, metal nut and single pickup is that the sustain should be pretty awesome. The more pickups and the more and less stiff contact points between the strings and the body, the faster the strings lose their vibrational energy.
And yes, it looks awesome too.

+1

Add a couple of Hiwatt stacks and you're ready to ride the "magic bus".
