I've been using this lightly padded, standard width leather strap for about 18 years now. Smooth leather on front, not-as-smooth, not-quite-suede leather on the back (which has worn down to nearly-smooth over the years).

I added the longhorn conchos, some Schaller strap locks and tied a mojo bag to the tail end of the strap.

The longhorn conchos are made out of old silver coins. Somebody has some type of machine that stamps them into that shape and pattern.

Image

Mojo bag contains some picks given to me by different guys (David Grissom, David Lee Holt, Buddy Whittington. BUGS Henderson and a couple of others), an old Mexican 10-peso coin, a broken E string from Joe Ely's guitar, a lock of my daughter's hair, a lock of my wife's hair, a rattlesnake rattle, three English one-Pound coins (a reference to a song my drummer and I wrote called "Three Pounds in My Pocket"), an autographed two dollar bills (Kim Wilson and Buddy Guy) and a shark tooth I found on the beach on Mustang Island.

I also have a couple of mesh straps, which I use with the acoustics or my resonator. I plan on getting or making a leather strap for each of those cases.

My favorites have been the "Jerry Garcia" straps, good color selection, comfortable and durable, I have 3 or 4 of them. But now when I went to buy another one I could only find them on Ebay for $75!

Time to look for a new style I guess.

I have a couple like this....

Sweet!!
I like it!

I mostly use Levy's straps.
I have pretty much one for each electric guitar I own and they're all pretty similar. 2 ½" wide, padded leather and colour coded to go well with the guitar they're on. No, studs or logos though. Only one has leather lace twisted along the edges like Mike's (above). It goes on my Tele.

Both my basses have Levy's straps as well but at 4" wide and without padding but still coloured to suit.

I do have other straps as well. My Epiphone LP has a Gibson strap and both my Taylors have Taylor straps.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I use a Franklin Black Leather 3" most of the time, and as a back up, this Levy's Leather 2.75".

I must have OCD a bit when it comes to straps - when I got my last Strat it took me a few months to find one that matched just right. In this case it was a Fender. Last 4 before that were Levi, My twin customs have matching grey hemp straps. Very soft. The bass weighs just a touch over 5 pounds and tends to neck dive a bit but the hemp doesn't slide so works out. My twin 'burst guitars have matching Levi leather straps. My LP Blue Strat has a matching blue strap with lightning bolts. My Stagemaster has a basic black First Act strap that I got at Wal-Mart cheap. Is a heavy guitar so I got one of those padded seatbelt cushion wraps from the automotive section. Helped a lot. Think the Les Paul has a Levi as well. Not so picky with acoustics but think one is a Levi. So guess I like Levi straps best but for the money have no issues with the First Act - just used a Sharpie to black out the logo.

Take a plain old 2" wide black nylon Planet Waves locking strap ...

... because I like the simplicity of the locking mechanism and ease of length adjustment.

But that's not cool enough, so go to Walmart (or wherever) and buy a short roll of 1.5" wide leopard skin pattern grosgrain ribbon, much like this...

Sew some onto the strap, with your trusty sewing machine. Straight stitch along the sides, and zig-zag the ends.
Et voila! The perfect strap for a Surf Green Jaguar.

I tried one of those once... the ends seemed rather clunky, and I was afraid that they would mess up the finish on my guitar. Hows the finish on your guitars after using that?

Another vote for Italia. I use 4 inch Italia straps exclusively with my basses. Easily worth 4 times the regular price and when they have a 2 for 1 sale they are a real bargain. A strap of this quality costs way more elsewhere because I've paid for straps from another custom strap shop. My favorite Italia color match up is the "crema" colored one with Fender blonde. But I have several black and brown ones I use with other colors. They are suede backed so the instrument stays locked in position and so thick that strap locks are totally unnecessary. Once on an instrument they stay on. Soft, pliable, comfortable and relatively cheap compared to other custom made garment leather straps. Italia straps are not fancy with a bunch of doo-dads or conchos. The are just functional, comfortable, safe and secure. Makes a bass feel lighter. If you have a bass with a neck dive issue the 4 inch suede backed Italia strap is an instant cure. The best bass strap I ever used at less than half the price of the next best custom one. Setup tech said, "Where'd you get the six-hundred dollar bass strap?" I paid like $40 for it in a 2 for 1 deal. They are made to order in California, so allow a couple of weeks for delivery.

The nylon fabric straps at Guitar Center, made by various companies are inexpensive (3 to 4 USD) and work fine. I have 1 for each guitar/bass guitar.

Super comfy and surprisingly good quality for the price. Combined with Schaller locking pins so the guitar doesn't fall off.

I've got the brown one. And also the Schaller straplocks.
