We got talking about this the other night and one that I used to
laugh about went back to the 70s playing "Knock Three Times" by
Tony Orlando & Dawn into "Whipping Post" by the Allman Brothers.

The crazier thing is that it worked !!!

So, what crazy medley of songs have you ever played?

wow,... how did you ever,,, never mind,, you don't need to explain! :)

I've done a few in the past but the made a bit more logical sense...

we tied three Zepplin tunes together, (Good Times Bad Times, Misty Mountain Hop, and How Many More Times)

an Aerosmith one too,, darned if I can remember all of them,, maybe sweet emotions, walking the dog, and another? it's kind a foggy,, too many bones smoked in that band...

Probably not too crazy, but we play So Lonely by the Police into Bob Marley's No Woman No Cry and then back to So Lonely.

The Georgia Satellites' "Keep Your Hands To Yourself" morphed into the Stones' "It's Only Rock and Roll" and then back again for the third verse.
I wish I could say I thought of that on my own, but I saw the Georgia Satellites do it in 1988.

We have done a medley of ZZ Top's La Grange into Chris Isaak's Baby Did A Bad, Bad Thing into Joe Satriani's Big Bad Moon into (our own songs) "Dirty Texas Groove" and "Feelin' Fine"...and occasionally throw in "Boom Boom" by John Lee Hooker.

"Who Do You Love" turns into "Not Fade Away" and that into "Ain't Got You" (by Springsteen, not the old Blues song).

Skynnard's "Simple Man" into "No Woman No Cry" weirdly worked with archangel of key.

The 70s were crazy - knock 3 times, then knock 4 times, etc...then bass started
Whipping Post. You get dancing on one & drinking on the next...club owners
liked that.

Some years ago I started playing a medley that worked for me:

Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin On" into Collective Souls "Heavy" then the Rolling Stones "Heartbreaker"

I played with a band that did "I Want A New Drug" by Huey Lewis and the News ... into "Ghostbusters" by Ray Parker Jr. Y'know cuz Ray kind of lifted that riff. More of a 'mashup' than a 'medley'.

Here's a cool trick: Type out your entire list of songs. Now precede each song title with the first chord in the song. Also, append the last chord in the song to the end of the song title. So you might have something like:

A - Beatles - Ticket To Ride - A

Once you have the entire set list in this format, start pairing up songs based on the ending and beginning chords. So a song that ends with an A chord might sound good going into a song that starts with an A chord, or a pleasant interval like a 5th up or down. So a song that ends with an A chord could go into a song that starts with an E chord (for example). Sometimes you come up with some nice transitions this way.

Not so much a medley as a weird juxtaposition, but one guy I knew used to randomly start songs with the opening riff to Iron Man, or insert it at odd places. Surprisingly, it works for more songs than one would think. Like playing it over the "Mother Mary comes to me" part of "Let it Be".
