In the can-you-believe-the-price category, according to this U.K. site, the most expensive guitar ever sold was the Reach out to Asia Fender Stratocaster. It sold for $2.7 million and was signed by "Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, Brian May, Jimmy Page, David Gilmour, Jeff Beck, Pete Townsend, Mark Knopfler, Ray Davis, Liam Gallagher, Ronnie Wood, Tony Iommi, Angus and Malcolm Young, Paul McCartney, Sting, Ritchie Blackmore, Def Leppard and Bryan Adams". The next most expensive guitar on the list is Jimi Hendrix’s 1968 Stratocaster believed to have been sold for $2.0 million.

If I had a million dollars, I'd certainly wouldn't spend it on a guitar, no matter what brand it is or when it was made, etc. I suppose if you were some sort of multi billionaire, then it wouldn't matter I suppose.
Exactly. It's all relative. For some of us, spending $5k on a guitar is out of the question. Others can't decide between maple and rosewood so they walk out with TWO Custom Shop models at $4k a pop. Do that math folks. BTW I've seen this with my own eyes which I still can't believe.

Well neither of those is going to sell for that kind of money.

I'll bet Page's will hit the million mark if it ever goes on the block.

Given some of the prices on the list, yours could be a safe bet, Blinkers.

Interesting to note that 4 out of the 10 guitars on that list belonged to EC.
Gold Leaf Strat - $455,550
1939 CF Martin & Co. - $791,500
1964 Gibson ES-335 TDC - $847,500
Blackie - 959,500

Cheers!

There's a vaguely parallel conversation happening in the fine art world. Artists becoming angered and disillusioned over creations that are sold at auction to "investors", who crate them up and store them until dividends can be collected at a future sale.

It's super-speculative so very risky, and it sort of devalues the art itself.

Much like a stupid-high price tag can devalue the instrument, in terms of it's role as a thing to make music with.

A moot point, since he passed away in 2013, but this always made me sad:

It's sadly true that Alvin Lee no longer travels with his beloved BIG RED, although Gibson has made him a duplicate of it. BIG RED has simply become too valuable to take on the road - Alvin has been offered $500,000 to part with it (not bad, as his purchase price was in the neighborhood of $90) , making it worth more than the average home and even more to insure

Sorry, but I agree with Drew, they can ask that ridiculous price, but doubt they will get it. I wouldn't spend those unbelievable sums on a guitar even IF Eric Clapton himself delivered it AND gave me lessons for a year!

Exactly... Look at the world famous classical cello player, Yo-Yo Ma. His incredible (and equally famous) cello is dated to 1733 and is valued at $2.5 million!!!

Funny you should mention that cello. A buddy and me saw Yo Yo Ma in a concert at the Univ of California, Davis (circa 1989 or so). After the show we wanted to meet him, so we snuck back stage and were just going into random rooms when we intruded upon ... that cello. No one around, and a door to exit right behind it. We looked at each and said, "We could steal that thing SO easily". We closed the door, leaving it right where it was ... I am a lot of things, but a thief not being one of them. We did end up running into Yo Yo MA in the hall. He was a very sweet man to meet and talk to.

Except trying to stealth away with a cello is not that easy.... lol

On the discussion it is about net worth. i recall when at the Monte Carlo historical Grand Prix looking at a late 1950's open wheeled, single central seated cockpit Mercedes, valued at around $25,000,000.00
A Japanese owner who travels the world races the merc in historical Grand Prix. There's only perhaps 5 of these in the world..
My point is that it is all relative. Many of the priceless Stradivarius, Guarneri violins are being played today. They are basically on loan to classical players for a limited time.. It would be nice if some of the guitar collectors would follow suit ...

Nope...I just don't get it. I never understood how people can be so incredibly wasteful and throw away money like that. Even if I had that kind of bread and even IF I had any interest in Les Pauls (which I don't), I would NEVER spend that kind of money on a guitar...I'd likely just buy a more contemporary version which is essentially still the same guitar....like Strats, it's not like LP's have changed THAT much over the years.

I'll stick with my Mexican Strats and my Chinese Artcore.

If I wanted to spend an enormous amount on a guitar, I'd call Yuriy Shishkov. I have no doubts that $50-80k in his hands will produce a far higher quality guitar than $500-800k for a 50 year old one.

No, when you are that liquid, cost doesn't enter the picture. It's not about wasting money it is about being able to spend that much as disposable income. It has nothing to do with resources and waste as a state of mind.
Some people are fortunate enough to not even have to consider wether that is too high of an ask price.
Which also doesn't mean they will not attempt to negotiate, but it's just what it is.

Perhaps that's one of the problems with the world today...maybe it should.

Either way, I just don't get it...and I hope I never do. When all is said and done, it's still just a guitar - there's just FAR better ways that kind of money could be spent.

When people start to spend this kind of money for whatever, it's not about function, it's about form. It becomes a collectible, a historical artifact, a piece of art, even if it wasn't made as a work of art originally.
I have a friend who collects limited edition tennis shoes and spends some big money on them, relatively speaking. He keeps them in display cases. They're not tennis shoes to him, they're trophies. I think it's ridicules, but not everyone thinks the same, so we have million dollar guitars and fifty million dollar cars. I took a picture of a $50 million dollar Ferrari last week, but I won't bore you with it because it looks just like a plain old $1 million dollar Ferrari.

Dylan's Newport Folk Festival Strat was a bargain - only $965,000!
