Saturday I followed a bandmate into a music store. He was going to buy some stash. Later that night we were going to play a gig (actually two, one in the pause of a local soccer-match!) -SO we were quite a bit at a good mood!!

Suddenly I was infected of my friends buying mood , and asked for the cheapest wah-wah pedal they had. It was a Vox V845-A. I thought 'that looked good!'- and bought it.
Last time I used and owned a wah , was in the seventies, also a Vox (combined with a fuzz inside)

I tried that new Vox at home, and loved the sound of it , but as soon as I switched it off, I could hear that my guitar sound was degenerated :?
Sunday (after a rather wet outdoor gig) -I was quickly searching the web about the issue, and one place it was very clear that the 845 did not have true by-pass, but the more expensive 847 had ! So- today I went back to the shop and changed the 845+$$ for a V847-A .The shop staff did not know much about it, so I was a bit excited to try it. It might be a tad better sounding than the 845 , but still no true by-pass

Now I really searched the net -and it appears that this is a very common problem - nearly no wah had the true by-pass ! With a couple of (expensive) exceptions.
On the plus-side :There were really many recipes to find in how to mod nearly every wah-pedal!

Do any of you guys have a good advice what to do ? Any suggestions for a wah with true by-pass ? I'm willing to go back and place some more $$ in their pockets :|
Thanx in advance !

What about a bypass pedal? Run one output through the Wah and the other directly past it... I'm still trying to run the diagram in my head and I'm not sure it's working...

Sounds like you know how to follow recipes and might be handy with a waffle iron. If so, find the wah that floats your boat and convert it to true bypass. Most wahs on the market follow the same basic time tested circuits anyways.....with a few component value changes here and there.

Good luck with wah tever you decide on. :D

That's an excellent suggestion. The only drawback is you can't engage and disengage all in one motion. That can be frustrating in certain situations. Also, some of those switches cost as much as some wah pedals, if not more.

Fulltone offers a nice wah pedal but it's quite expensive......

Thank you , guys ! I guess the mod is the way to go . Frankies suggestion also sounds a bit tempting, but as Socal323 says , it might be a bit inconvenient. I'll give this some more thoughts.
Arjay, I'll see if they're available where I live- but there is always the internet :D

If the sound is degraded when you turn it off, just leave it on set into a position that sounds good. You need to change batteries every gig but small price to pay if you like the sound and tone. I use the Vox 847 and I really like the tone of it over everything else I have tried over the years and made it part of my sound.

FWIW

Yup. Today I dragged my third Wah back home. This one stays. It's a BBE Wah. To the cost of ca three times the price of the Vox 845 8) I'll post this short (rather dull) vid to give you an idea what it is:

I liked the sound of it , and the possibility to adjust the amount of effect , AND at last - the true bypass. I have just tried it for 5-10 minutes  - and could not find that it sucked out any of my tele's sound, while not engaged. (have yet to see/hear (!) how it goes with my new strat!!)

T2- I like your approach , but I love the sound from my strat as it is , so I prefer to have the possibility of letting it ''breathe out'' the sounds I've gotten used to the month I've owned it.

The difference in tone is so insignificant. The audience doesn't know the difference, so why should I care?

That's what you think  In fact , my ears are particularly older and more worn out than yours- and I have no problem hearing the difference ! In my little world the sound of the instrument often guides me to what to play- and when it sounds awful, I loose the inspiration. That again will affect the audience. At least on a good day  IMHO

Thanks again for your replies and suggestions !

+1 on the BBE Ben-Wah. OR an original Dunlop Cry Baby can easily and inexpensively be modded for true bypass.

I've always used the classic dunlop crybaby (the one with the red fasel, just fine) and never had any tone issues, to be honest. Maybe because I always add a slight crunch to the tone even in the clean songs... But the results I get are pretty good.

Even the clean stuff I play with the band is quite all right...

If you REALLY think a non tru-bypass wah is altering your sound, then I think you should spend some $$$ and get yourself one of the few boutique ones available.

Or a loop switcher with true bypass.

Buying a wah was in the first place just a flip- felt a sudden urge for having one. It turned out to be a very interesting pleasure- I love playing with the wah.
That made me think more seriously about it , and started searching for a wah with true bypass. I came across this BBE , and I am very satisfied. I have settled with this one. I'm busy enough to be happy not to deal with any modding , for the time being. I'm happy with this one , but thanks again for your inputs !
