The man, the legend, I never thought it would happen, but...

Punky - absolutely one of my fav guitarists (and a Strat man) - was the guitar player in Angel, a late-70s group that was the quintessential "ahead of their time" band. Think hit-era Journey mixed with the 80s metal scene, but 5-10 years earlier.
This...is...awesome. Any other Angelophiles out there?

Interesting, a name I have not heard in many a moons..
I didn't care much for Angel, although the musicianship was solid, the religious theme was over the top. Think of Queen glam times 10.

I much preferred Punky's ( Edwin ) previous band BUX, Ralph Morman on vocals who went on to the Joe Perry Project and to Savoy Brown. Still have that vinyl LP amongst the collection..

But put into context, Angel was a reflection of the arena rock of the time.... Fun nevertheless. As a guitar player he was good, so let's see what develops here...

Punky was a friend of Eddie Van Halen before VH released their first album. VH was planning on releasing "You Really Got Me" as their lead single. Eddie - against Ted Templeman's orders to keep it a secret - played VH's version of the track to Punky two weeks before it was to be released. Angel immediately went into the studio to rush release their own "You Really Got Me" before VH would release theirs. Angel got it out, but it was DOA. You know what happened to the VH version... Oh, and of course, then there was the Frank Zappa parodies of Punky. Who could forget that??

To me, Angel's problem was that they did not know if they wanted to be ELP, Yes, or Kiss. Hence, they were a little bit of each, and the overall sum was a little forgetful. They had some good stuff, but never enough to really draw me in.

It makes you wonder at just which point do you lose yourself as a musician and a person, start to believe the marketing hype.
I would assume that has a lot to do with his retiring from the madness fairly early. As a musician and as part of an audience, I never could really get into bands like this. No matter how great the music would be. The theatrical just smothered the music. Kiss was/is the same way. I saw them on their 1st tour 1974-75 in Peru Indiana. They played in a fairgrounds tent venue. Fun it was but I never wanted to see them again.

Queen for me was almost borderline, but you couldn't argue with the musical content. ELP I'm not sure they even were part of the theatrical genre.
That a band has charisma, stage presence, that the theatrics if any amplify the musical content, but with Angel or Stryper or for me even David Bowie was at times way too much. ( referring to Ziggy days )

But IMHO YMMV....

Exactly what came to mind as soon as I saw the post! Punky's Whips! Beat me to the punch, and rock on to all the Zappa alumni!

Agree, the Bux album was really good (and unfortunately not available on CD); Ralph Mormon is a criminally unknown singer. Bux also had a bit of the identity crisis previously described - some boogie, some hard rock, some Cream-style blues, even a bit of Queen in the mix. But that's what, in retrospect, I find so endearing about bands of that era. They weren't confined to one genre (pop, hard rock, metal, alternative, country, etc) like bands are today. They could be a bit of many things, even if at times to their detriment.

Bux was one of those bands whose members went on to greater achievements.
Silverhead was also of that genre time period. Lead singer is today an accomplished actor ( Michael De Barres ) one of the guitarist went on to play with Robert Plant ( Robbie Blunt ) and the bassist was part of Blondie's rhythm section ( Nigel Harrison )

None of the players in any successful band just rose up out of nowhere, they all cut their chops in sometimes very different musical troupes..

Robbie Blunt is an AMAZING guitar player. Those first three Plant solo albums were awesome ... and a lot of that was due to Blunt. Phenomenal player. I was lucky enough to see Plant twice during that time, including the first tour where Phil Collins was his drummer.

I was a HUGE Angel fan back in the day. My first rock concert was Rush, Angel, and Max Webster. My Angel albums are long gone, but I do have a CD or two and want to get more. I still enjoy listening to them.

To me, Angel's music is timeless, but I can't stand listening to any of the 80s Hair Bands anymore!
