Funny, but applicable: I'm a car guy as well as a guitar guy. Weight displacement is a primary factor. With a car, wider tires give you less traction because there's less weight per square inch of rubber on the pavement. Same is true with a guitar strap. When I first got my Telecaster my shoulder was killing me after a 2 or 3 hr practice. I got a wider strap (less lbs per sq in), problem solved. if you like the tone from a heavier guitar, get a wider strap. Just sayin'

That is only true at low torque. At high torque, narrow tyres can spin while wider ones still have grip, partly because the torque is distributed on a wider surface causing the tyres to deform less, and partly because a wider tyre allows for a softer rubber, which offsets the grip loss from the weight distribution.

Performance enthusiasts put real effort into finding the optimal tyre width for the power of a car. For a family car, narrow tyres might be optimal, but anything sub-5-seconds on 0-60 will need wider ones, because the narrow ones (and, often, the road) can't deal with that much torque, and will at best deform at the contact point and skip, or at worst, tear. Neither is good traction. :)

Uh, sure......

Go ahead and put Pinto-sized rubber on your F250 dualie the next time you go dune-hopping in the desert or rock-crawling in the mountains and let us know how that works out.

(keep that Triple-A towing service phone number handy though)

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

How's it going guys... been awhile. Point being... would you rather strap your Fat Strat over your shoulder with a clothes-line? or a nice, comfy, 4" wide leather? It's good to be home. I'd ask if you wanna race, but my car's a little busy right now...

Ahhhh... Nice!! I took everything off the bottom of mine after 10 years, got another engine, replacing the auto with a 5-on-the-floor, patched all the holes underneath, gave all the parts a phosphoric bath and painted them. Now I have to do the same with the chassis and then bolt it all back together.... this is probably the biggest reason I haven't been here for so long.
This was last year...

And here's where I'm at now...

Frankie is dead on right about narrower tires having better traction due to more weight per square inch. The two examples that dispute that--wide racing tires for sub 5 second quarter miles and dune-bugging are extreme examples not applicable to everyday driving. In a dune- buggy, you want wide tires for 'float' so your axles don't get buried in sand and your differential gets hung up. As for a sub 5 quarter it's safe to say that 99.9999% of the time that much torque is not being sent down most folks drivetrain. Narrow tires do not look cool but they have gotten me through a few winters in northern Minnesota with superior traction.

I wouldn't really take car advice from someone who can't tell quarter mile and 0-60 apart...

Yeah, Arth1 you're right I meant 0-60 instead of quarter-mile, my mistake. Of course, I doubt someone as brilliant and opinionated as you takes advice from anyone.

... I thought we were discussing guitar weight... My point was, with a heavier guitar, a wider strap distributes the weight over a larger area on your shoulder so it's more comfortable... What I do notice about the drags is how tall and skinny those slicks get when that torque hits

You guys are all over the place with your thoughts on tires and grip. Brandreaus, skinny tires do cut through rain and snow better than an fatter tire. But get on dry pavement and a wider tire will have better grip, if the rubber compound is similar.
A drag tire or any race tire grips by heat. Usually about 180 to 200 degrees for a track tire. Any cooler or any hotter and they lose grip. They usually cycle out after about 12 heat cycles and are then useless. That's why race tires have no tread, it's not needed. The more rubber on the pavement at the right temp, the more grip you will have. The only time a skinny tire might be faster is on a high speed oval where drag from a too wide tire starts to slow the car down. I've raced at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and that's the case there. Go too wide and you start to slow down. But because of drag, not less grip.
Race cars have wide tires for a good reason, they grip better.
I don't know what this has to do with guitar weight, but you hit on something I have some experience with, so I chimed in.

Gershwin's Law applies.

It's only if the pull on the strap is equally and evenly distributed that this is the case. Which means you either have to have a very old and worn strap that has deformed to fit your shoulders, or so much flab on your shoulders that the shoulder deforms to fit the strap. For most people, almost all the weight is going to be on the inner side of a wide strap, and next to no weight on the outer side.
For me, a soft strap by far feels more comfortable than a wide one. The Fender twill weave strap (incorrectly called tweed) is the one that is most comfortable for me, while a wide white leather one is by far the most uncomfortable, with the inner edge digging in. YMMV.

Well, obviously they're made from bass wood?
