This could be interesting for you audiophiles.

We’re pleased to announce the arrival of Apple Records on the TIDAL servers. For the first time ever, the iconic label of The Beatles is making it’s non-Beatles catalog available for streaming. And while the Fab Four remain the elusive white whale of the streaming world, we’re delighted to welcome their storied catalogue of this historic label.

Yeah, you got to love streaming services where you (the artist) get screwed making any money from your work. You got to love those fraction of a penny per play payments you make, while someone like Spotify has those nice cushy offices and all. I guess pimpin' ain't easy, though. :P

Too many people are either streaming or using P2P downloading
sites these days. Many "live music" clubs are closing down. A few of
my musician friends (or ex-friends) are doing DJ work now instead
of playing live. It's the beginning of the end IMO and YMMV.

I for one make music for the sake of enjoyment, it'd be in the wrong business if it was for the money. I download from p2p but I also buy music on LPs because I like the album arts and the story an album may tell, the songs in the order an artist intended to. I also support my musicians buddies by seeing them live but none of them are in it for the money either.

It used to be a way to make a living for me. The times have changed.
No more venues for 7 nights a week gigging then moving on down
to the next city/state/venue for same.

It's ok to play for the fun of course, but... if you are taking gigs for little or no money on the weekends, you are doing a disservice to the rest of the gigging players/musicians because venues/clubs/bars now accept that as the norm. I'd rather stay at home and practice or have a band rehearsal than take a bull**it gig. Until we the musicians and players value music as something that is unique to our skillset and worth more than beer money, we will have what we have right now: you are less valued than the bloke that mops the bar floors once a week.

As far as streaming, I don't think I know enough about the arrangement between the artists and the streaming service. Surely if the artists don't reach an agreement about pay, their copyright protected works can not be featured on the site, right? OK I guess they make a bigger cut of the money when you buy their CD? Then lower the damn prices for CD's!

From what little I understand of the music industry, a lot of artists make the bulk of their income from touring/ticket sales and get money from the sale of merchandise like T shirts rather than from album sales.

Personally, I don't like music streaming - I prefer to pay for a physical CD even if it costs more. Also the sound quality is better.

Plus, there are costs to consider to even produce and record music, if you want to do it professionally. Gear isn't cheap, neither. Then there's the cost of mastering, promo, etc. Even the recording studios have been closing down left and right over the years. Places that made legendary albums, even. Of course, there's a lot advancements in home studios, but even that stuff isn't cheap. A lot of that stuff can go into the $1000's and then some.

IMHO also YMMV
Battle of the bands (big in my high school days when the dinosaurs cruised my hood) has been replaced with Battles of the DJays where iWatches wave in the air.

Another problem is that ALOT of the people get their albums from less than reputable outlets that are far cheaper than the "normal" prices you see on Amazon, iTunes, or whatever ... but these outlets don't properly pay the artists. For example, there are Russian music download sites which cost $0.16/track or less. For me, I have a hard time paying more than $2 per album when I know I don't have to. Sorry, just being honest. And there are ALOT of free sharing sites where you can download any album or bootleg you want for free. It is the wild west out there...

Wild west indeed. Some things stay the same. Chitlin' cirquit, the late great Borscht Belt, the tri-sate area in the east, every bar VFW hall tavern with a stage from the great lakes to the pacific coast, all of the roadhouses across Texas and the southwest. Bands have always battled for those audiences. The talented ones play on, the others give up and go home or become DJs. All good. Chicagoland (6 county area) population 10 mil give or take. Good bands here do 200 shows a year but could do more. They sell merch at those very shows. If you want to play, we can play.

The only download site I have ever used is iTunes. I rarely buy anything from them too. I'm a CD guy. I buy them and rip them into my iTunes on my computer for the purpose of creating playlists. I usually only buy form iTunes when I want a single song from an artist. I often listen to an artist on YouTube or on the 30 second demos on iTunes before buying.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
