'YMMV" was something Martian often signed off with. Danagos was not sure what it represented but has opted for its continuance in blessed memory of Roy on these Forums. Sitting here today, reviewing some posts, I was musing on the letters and remembered, somewhere in one of our discussions, their meaning was revealed. I searched "Martian'' in archives and, sure enough, it came back in a response from Ceri. It stands for "Your Milage May Vary''. I assume he used it to denote a situation in which there might be more than one opinion or outcome. So, in keeping with Danagos, I too will carry on with it where appropriate.

YMMV :!:

Doc

The expression came from those EPA stickers that are required on new cars, thus 'mileage' instead of 'experience':

Yep... It's an acronym for a metaphor implying that your experience/opinion may differ... :D :D

cheers!

Martian used that after informative posts cleverly worded with IMHO YMMV at their close. My favorite Martian. 8)

Martian also used it to close an argument when a debate was ensuing....
depending on the context or theme there was or was not inherent sarcasm present..

I love it, have used it a couple times.
Thanks Doc for bringing this up...

Thank You To Our Favorite Martian for the George Carlinesque closer...

Yea, the story I talked about in the birthday thread happened back in the old forum format.

It was a great way to explain that while he had his opinions and reasons for them, everyone is different, and there really is no right answer (concerning tone), but there may be a right answer for YOU.

I don't remember him ever giving his opinion as an absolute, but rather, something to consider.

Considering the idea that we are all different, play different styles and equipment, our opinions don't always work for everyone. Martian was always conscious and careful with that.

I met Roy while in a road band when he was working as a tech
in a Staten Island music store and I had stopped in for strings and
we got to chatting about all things guitar. It wasn't until after this forum
got started and I saw his responses as we had discussed that day that
I PM'd him and as it turned out he was the same guy. It can be a very
small world. If his brothers, daughter or other family and friends are
monitoring this thread, my sincerest condolences to you all.
