8) !

There weren't humbucker-equipped Telecasters in the 1950s, Wide Range humbuckers didn't came into surface until the early 1970s. :o

Players like Keith Richards, Pete Townshend and Albert Collins already hot-rodded their Teles with Gibson humbuckers a couple of years before CBS introduced the Wide Ranges.

This reclaimed redwood guitar takes a spin on the early '50s design with a hint of '70s flavors into the mix.

The jumbo frets certainly isn't "Vintage '50s" either.
It's certainly a good looking guitar, but it's neither fish nor fowl.

+1

The jumbo frets and compound radius make for modern playability; the addition of the Wide Range humbucking pickup in the rhythm position is not a correct-period feature for a '50s Telecaster (though Keef had put a Gibson PAF in his beloved Micawber many years later).

I could do without the "modern playability" on the neck. None of that interests me. I don't mind a humbucker in the neck position. The neck pick up isn't something I'd use often anyhow. I like the traditional Tele layout, but I'm also a fan of the wide range bucker and the Cabronita Gretsch pick ups there, too. Or none, and just a nice Esquire. Nice guitar, though. Kind of a "Hot Rod" version. I really wish Fender would do American Vintage limited editions like this more often on both bass and guitar. More colors outside the base model, and a couple nice mods. More American Vintage is always a good thing, even if it's Hot Rods, imo.

It's nice, it's different. Perhaps had Fender named it "Vintage Styled " would have been more appropriate as far as criticism about replicating the 50's.

For what it is it stands on its own two feet  . I would definitely buy one. Looks aged without the relic ( overplayed motif IMHO but YMMV ). It has class and would fit right in between a Broadcaster and a Telecaster Deluxe..

Nice one Fender... 8)

Agreed. I think releasing this as an American Vintage Limited Edition "Hot Rod" would have been better. No one flips out about those and we get them every year. They are "technically" part of the American Vintage line as they use those instruments as a base, but then get tricked out with modern, or just custom options. I think that even though this obviously uses the 50's Tele as a starting point it definitely takes off from there. Which is fine for limited editions and the like, imo. I agree with the relic comment, too. As an active player I don't get it. If you're working with a vintage reissue in nitro it's not going to take long for it to start wearing naturally. Both my AVS 57 P, and Custom Shop NOS 55 P are wearing in very nicely only after two years and one year respectively. Granted I work a lot, but still.

I wonder how big the D shape neck is? Is is fat like the 50's baseball bat necks or is it like the Gibson 60's fast taper D?

I keep parting out Fender necks because they are thin with exception of the 50's baseball bat necks...

Anyone try one yet?

I wonder the same thing. I too prefer the 50's necks (The U and Soft V) and cannot get along with most C necks. (with the exception of my AVS 57 Precision RI, however I still prefer the CS 51's U and 55's V to it)

I've been wanting to get a Tele as I've been considering bringing in an electric on my solo project instead of doing it solely acoustic. I've found that outside of the AVS 52 RI I find most necks too slim for my tastes. Which would be fine if a 52RI was wholly what I was after. However, I think I want something a little "different" in terms of configuration. This might be a cool option.

I wonder if the D just have heavier shoulders, but is still slim front to back like the C? Instead of being deeper as with a U or V? I love that the higher end Fender limited editions give us some of these cool old options, but unfortunately due to where I live I never get to play them. :/

As far as I know, Fender does not have a D neck, unless you mean the A-B-C-D designation for neck widths. The 50s "U" neck might be the closest thing.

Redwood is another name for Sequoia, yes. They're cypresses, and closer related to fir than pine, and a quite soft and light wood.
It can be very pretty, though, as the above picture shows.
