I love the inspired-by-Rube-Goldberg tremolo tailpiece. It resembles the same design that Gibson adopted for the '61 Les Paul. That one was a piece of crap too.

Because for that kind of money I can buy 100 shares of Netflix. A RI model would suit me just fine.

+1

Or conversely, roughly nine 1-ounce, brilliant uncirculated, 2015 gold American Eagles (if, like me, you're somewhat risk-averse as you enter the geriatric stage of an investing hobby).

I like Rickenbacker guitars, but I wouldn't trade my Stratocaster for one.

The cost is right up there with a Fender Am. Vintage Jazz. I wouldn't trade this for an Am. Vintage Jazz.

Twenty years ago I walked into this hidden, hole in wall music shop that was no bigger than a large walk-in closet. On display was a brand new, never played Ric 360/12 in gloss black with a gloss wood fingerboard (African Mahogany, very grainy & beautiful). My brain disengaged and I walked away with that and a Crate amp with chorus, reverb, etc for $1,500. Look at today's prices if they let you see them.

The sound was everything you can imagine from a Ric 12 string. I also bought a Fender Chorus (Princeton?) amp and the ric-a-sound gadget (not a Y split) and played through both amps in true stereo. It was probably less than a month when I realized it was unplayable. The neck was incredibly narrow, it was strung with the bass strings before the octave strings (couldn't fret cleanly) and the spacing between the pairs was like an eighth of an inch. I wanted it so bad I thought I could work through it. I took it to a well known luthier and had him change the nut, put the octave strings first and correct the spacing. It was better, but still unplayable. I traded it for some recording equipment and went back to my acoustic, which was playable.

Moral of story. You must play Rickenbackers before buying (either 6 or 12) with brain engaged. You'll know. It's a different animal and stringing the 360/12 was next to impossible. The necks are pencil thin and narrow. I love the looks and the sound which can not be replicated. Very punchy, loud and clear. I no longer lust for Rickenbackers and love my Strat.

At our stage, go for self-gratification. What makes you happy. Screw the nephews and nieces and their vulture children; they can make their own fortune or misfortune. Go to Tokyo, London, Honolulu and buy expensive tickets to your favourite artists, and get that Marshall Super Lead if you want it. It's your bullion, and who's entitled to enjoy it more than you?

I've been jonesing a nice Rick at a local store, but I fear my hands are just too big. I wish they had a Rickenbacker with the wider (i.e. normal size) 12-string neck but on a 6-string guitar. Didn't they make some wider neck models back in the old days?

The 650 series has a 1 3/4" nut. They still make it.

This is my 1980 360/12. I once changed the strings on a 12 string guitar and ended up using two sets as I broke a couple of strings. After that I vowed that I would pay someone to do it in future as it is not an enjoyable experience. Normally I love changing the strings on my Guitars and give them some TLC at the same time but not with my Rick.

I had the strings changed and a full setup done and now that it's back, it was totally worth it. It plays better than ever. :)

I'm confused. Nothing new about that. But, hey . . . I'm an old codger.

With this love/hate relationship of Rics, how is it that they still have a following? Perhaps, owning and playing one is a challenge to be won or shown to those with lesser ability? Is the sound something that can't be maintained or improved with subtle re-design to the playability parts in question, or are there those that truly love this axe the way it is? Is it nostalgia over practicality? Has Rickenbacker lent an ear to the customers and potential customers? Surely, set up experience would feed back to the manufacturer. I know. Rickenbacker wouldn't be original if it was altered, but . . .

I hope to get one in my hands to see for myself some day them being purty and all. 8)

You answered it yourself:

They're good guitars, but not exactly cheap. And the whole "price can't be displayed" thing rubs many the wrong way. They're guitars, not Rolls Royces.
