That's cool. I'm curious to know if there's much of a difference with the fretboard, compared to the old rosewood kind. I noticed, even though they dropped using rosewood, they kept the price as high, compared to if it had maple.

That sounds good, Glenn. At Chilliwack’s last concert (as mentioned elsewhere) a Strat in Olympic White was given away. That colour not on only looks sweet, but, the last I looked, the well known 3 tone sunburst was commonly favoured by a long shot (around 40%), and white was the next most popular colour in Fender’s lineup. If I recall correctly red was next.

I seem to also recall reading that there was a brief time when maple necks were sold by dealers as a premium due to less of them being in stock or something like that. Maybe someone can verify this.

All of this changes over the years of course; however, those popular colours still are popular. :D

As for pricing, strange that the modern day rosewood fretboard gains the same buying price point as the original when stacked against the maple that had held equal footing before? Both rosewoods are good, but definitely different while the maple per se has not changed over the years.

I noticed that too. Pau Ferro isn't a type of Rosewood, that I know of. One of those things I guess, when they raise a price on something, why drop it, no matter what.

I've always liked Fenders in Olympic White. It's definitely a Fender traditional finish. I'd love to have a Mustang PJ in Olympic White, with a Maple Fretboard. In away, I guess it's a nice variation having the Pau Ferro on the Mustang PJ, since my Jazz, and Precision both have Maple Fretboards.

It's probably just corporations doing what corporations do. :P I can typically afford only the Squiers, so I guess it's a moot point for me, although even some of those have gone up in price, too. My Squier Telecaster costs $100 more now then what I paid for it back in 2012 or 2013, whenever that was I got it, but they didn't tack on any extra expense to the rosewood fretboard Squiers, like they did Fender. I'm also assuming they are still using rosewood for the Squiers, as well. I didn't notice any spec changes the last time I looked.

Can’t wait to see your new addition, Glenn. Okay, I’ll hang around to see that Pau Ferro Olympic White Mustang PJ. If I know you, it’ll look cool.
As for my earlier post, the 60’s maple fretboard cost versus the rosewood is sketchy at best. Here's the summary I’ve collected amongst the sites. Halfway through ‘59 rosewood replaced maple exclusively, ‘65 (CBS) maple capped necks came as a special order, ‘66 available without special order as an option at no extra cost, and 1969 (at least with many basses) and 1970 (Strats) full maple necks with a skunk stripe were an option. Which maples cost more than rosewood? I’m guessing the special order ones in ’65, I’m not sure. Variations of models are sure to exist. As I said, the actual dates, design, and models are sketchy; but, that’s the gist. That’s if the facts were not fake news.

Factoid: Birdseye maple can be up to seven times more expensive than hardwoods, so I wouldn’t rule that out. Hank Marvin had a ‘59 Strat with birdseye, but some thought is that birsdeye was too expensive for Leo’s general use , and that’s from a common plentiful wood.

The Pau Ferro on this Mustang PJ is a brighter brown color, and it has a more pronounced grain in the board. It doesn't look too bad. I've seen the Rosewood boards on 4003 Rickenbackers look similar to this Pau Ferro on this Mustang PJ.
Pricing on certain Fender, Fender Squiers series basses, and guitars are sometimes a challenge to keep up with.

What exactly is the issue with the rosewood in the first place? Is it on the verge of becoming extinct, or something like that? They aren't planting new trees, or it's a difficult tree to grow?

It get's a bit complicated. It's a protected wood, and the governments are playing games with it. You you should really look this up to get the real story on it.

So, it's basically government red tape stuff, I take it. :P

A thought just came to mind, as the world’s population increases so does the use of natural material. At the present rate it shouldn’t be long before we see even more reasonable alternative solutions, recycling and repurposing, and marketing ploys hanging on to yesterday at a cost while promoting a current form. Tomorrow’s guitar may not even resemble those of today.
Just a thought

There have been guitars that have been made of alternative materials besides wood, so perhaps there will be advancements in that area.

I'm pretty much out of the purchasing of basses anymore, but to me a type of wood is about it for a body, neck , or board.

This is just one man’s opinion. I certainly believe that acoustic string instruments benefit from wood choices and finishes.

Once electrics are the subject the story changes. I think that wood choice and finishes, although they have some audible bearing, for the most part, all become eye candy. As for the neck there is a tactile advantage to it, and a perceived tone difference.

To change any or all wood for another material would, all things being equal, definitely make a different sound and playability; but, not necessarily. All things don’t have to be equal.

They can be emulated. All of this in today’s electronic world can be simulated. In fact it is more likely that any guitar will sound different from another without electronic support than with it. Although, some manufacturers, through years of experience grasped or borrowed, or because of technology, have managed to more closely repeat a guitar’s given tone.

Just my opinion, but the wonderful world of guitars is simply that - a wonder. :D
FSB

I also believe that chucking the weight of some axes would be welcomed given the same features, tonal qualities, eye candy, and quality build.

Still, there is something to be said about new cars and ‘57 Chevies, modern guitars and classic axes.

YMMV
