I think back to the 60s and my heroes we’re for the most part percussionists from all genres. I soon learned that drums and techniques were only part of the whole. Drummers could come from the back and lead a band. Rich, Dave Clark, Cozy Cole, Mongo Santamaria, Sandy Nelson, and later Fleetwood, Collins, Grohl, and others. I was hooked as drummers came to be accepted as equal players in the band.

Still I liked the Everly Brothers whom I admired with their style, Scotty Moore, George Benson, Larry Coryell, Wes Montgomery, Al Caiola, Carlos Montoya, The Shadows, The Ventures, The Fendermen, everything surf or psychedelic, and a lot more.

I know that good bass players, and even more, great ones are hard to find. I would have had no issue taking up the bass or electric guitar instead of drums in those early days. I had some guitar background, but also played drums in brass bands and with pianists, etc. At first I thought that most if not all my preferred genres were accessible with my drum playing, and maybe not so much with guitar unless you had a lot of proficiency or savoir faire. So drums won out.

Had I foresight, I could have spent less money with those early guitars as opposed to the cost of drum gear, I would have likely gotten a cool return for my investment.

Today, I enjoy the Strat immensely, but there are other instruments I wouldn’t mind having. (I’m thinking of renting a bass in the future to lay some tracks). That comes from the good fortune of having had a variety of classic house instruments in various studios that I had the opportunity to dabble with.

To summarize I can say that I have great respect for musicians at all levels regardless of their choice of instrument or genre. It’s all good . . . but some is better. :D
YMMV

Do you still play the drums at all, or you just play guitar?

I remember you telling me a long time ago about your dad. That's always a good thing when a family is music oriented, I think, since it usually winds up being more of an encouragement if you want to learn to play something. My family weren't any musicians, other than maybe my oldest sister dabbled with a guitar when she was younger, but they were artist or creative in other ways. My other sister is an artist, with various mediums, like painted, sculpting, etc.

Yes, I do, Paul. Just for personal enjoyment.

For years I lived in townhouses and apartments, so my drumming was often restricted to a studio. It was there I practiced on weekends. I was sometimes recruited for the odd live performance at the request of my employer; but, over the years the kit has been downsized, having lost some vintage Zildjians, but still adequate. The drums spent some time in storage and, never a pleasure, I no longer haul the gear. The last live performance I did with a rock band was with timbales for a friend’s birthday celebrated on a copter flight deck on a destroyer, and that was in the 90s. The harbour rocked that night.
Today, I have a family room that has the traps recently set up with a full drum mic kit going into a mixer. The set up
has been dormant for a little while. I just haven’t found the time to engage them.

I have always appreciated working out on the drums for cardio exercise, and it is a great tool for chilling out. I’ll put on Tower of Power, Buddy Miles and Santana, Buddy Rich, Sandy Nelson, Michael Jackson, Doobies, AC/DC, and more to jam with. Sometimes, I’ll play with or for friends. Sadly, my playing is not up to what it once was as lack of practice with drumming can take it’s toll. There is, however, enough to appreciate though.

I intend to record some original things, and I want to try some experiments with effects, backward, pitch, speed, flanging, delay, and such. Can’t wait to try that with my antique cowbell.
That aside, I was a hold out for any electronic drums or sampling. Those days are gone. It’s really good now, and pre-recorded sampling as opposed to the acoustic drums is a whole lot easier to record and produce. I may find myself retiring the drums for recording, and going the plugin route. I don’t want to sound like another with the same or similar drum track, however.

To summarize and answer your question, Paul: When creative juices flow, the original hands on has it’s own mojo.

The Strat gets and needs more attention these days. 8)

It sure helps to have music going in the family to get the kids into it.

An electronic drum kit works pretty well if acoustic drum volume is an issue. My girlfriend used to have a set like that, since she also plays drums, besides everything else. You can get different sounds with them, too.

That's true, especially supportive ones.

No problem with volume here, Paul. Buying percussion gear is over since I have moved on, but thanks for the suggestion. I now live in a house with one neighbour who worked for Warner Brothers many years ago, and the other neighbour’s brother teaches percussion, and he has dabbled in it himself. So I got lucky.

I wish I had a musical family like you, Glenn. I have one member who is an accomplished accordion player, but it’s not my thing. It’s right up there with bagpipes for me. I don’t wear my clan’s Irish kilt either, but I do eat pierogies. Other than that, I have two young nieces who are connected to guitar, keyboard, sax, and euphonium. I don’t know where that’s going, but I know it’s a long way from now.

My father was no stranger to recording studio sound rooms. He started out playing a trombone. My mother played keyboards.

My former general manager played the trombone, and he would initiate a jam together at the Christmas parties with a familiar 20 piece band. Cool instrument. :D

I always thought it be cool to play different bass related instruments, besides the bass guitar. Anything that typically uses the bass clef in standard notation (tubas, bassoons, etc.)

We used to have a marimba set up in the studio for a band leader who was a regular. That was a hoot to play with.

Those are pretty cool. You ever play around with steel drums?

No. It sure looks like fun though. I have a couple of old scratched up steel drum albums that I will likely clean up on the PC some day. One of them has the US Coastguard playing them. Speaking of which, I spent some time in clubs on American bases like Whydbey Island, Treasure Island, and Norfolk, and I was constantly blown away by the amount and quality of the musical talent amongst the troops. I’m sure they still rock. :D

Those things are pretty cool sounding, I think. It's neat how they even make and tune them in the first place.

I'm finding my way back to a Fender Mustang PJ. Olympic White with a Pau Ferro Fretboard.
