I remember some of the old school amps they use to have back in the day (at least my day,) that I used to play through all of the time.

There was this Gibson GB-440 bass stack, that the ThunderFunk guy designed (there was discussion about this somewhere awhile back,) Crate BX-440H bass stacks, Trace Elliots, stuff that's no longer around. The funny thing is 400 watts seemed to be pretty loud back then, but now there's 1000 watters like it's nothing at all. Kind of ridiculous, when you think about it. Meanwhile, I have one. :P

By the way, I wanted to get that Crate head, at the time. It sounded better than the Peavey I had, a lot of features, and pretty loud. I never did, though. I happened to see one for $250 on eBay, just now. If I needed another head, and the thing had no issues, I'd pick it up, no problem. It might be considered "obsolete" with all of the Class D stuff now, but it still works.

It's ironic of what we considered to be powerful, and loud bass amps back in the days of the Monster Amps. Your Orange 1,000 watt is a Little Giant.

Yeah, I remember the first time I ever even heard of an amp even being 400 watts, was a Dean Markley amp. That's an amp you'd have to do some serious internet digging to find anything out about, probably. I just remember seeing an ad for one for sale in the music paper and thinking, "400 watts? Wow, that must be loud!" :P Then I got my Peavey Databass, which was 450 watts. I will say, that thing was a beast, especially for a combo with a 15" speaker in it. I needed it, because my friend, at the time who played guitar, had a Peavey Special Combo, which was 130 watts with 2 x 12" speakers. He wasn't shy with the volume knob, either.

The first 1,000 watt amp I remember seeing, was the Coral Kilowatt Amp. And that didn't make it.

I remember you talking about that one a long time ago. I think I found some info about it on the web, too. Maybe it was ahead of it's time, or wasn't promoted enough. If it was Solid State, that technology was problematic when it was new, until the bugs were ironed out. I think the same thing happened with Class D amps, from what I remember 10 years ago, or whatever.

I thought it would've been pretty decent since Coral was being made by Danelectro.

Yeah, I know. It's certainly one of those amps lost to the ages. How long was it on the market, you remember?

That's a good question Paul. I really don't remember. It was similar to the Standel rack style amp. It didn't go over either. Good ideas, but for what ever reason, there, and gone.

I think that's always been the case with amps and such. Here today, gone tomorrow. Sometimes, it's just the company itself that has a problem and not the product.

That's true, Coral never really went over as they should have. Mosrite was another that didn't achieve it's full potential.

I think they are still around in a sense, besides everyone and their brother making copies of them. The guy's daughter started making them again. I'm not sure if she still is in business, though. I was going to link her website, but it looks like it's gone, unless it moved elsewhere. It's been a couple of years since I had looked at it last, I think. I should really go through all of my saved links and weed out what's no longer around, but it will take awhile to do it, since I have quite a few. I think I still even have the link to your old forum in there, Backstage Door.

Lee offered me a one of his Mosrites in the early 70's. I should have taken him up on it.

Yeah, it would probably be worth a few coin these days, too.

Yeah, it was the one on an album cover.
