What do you think of brass nuts on basses? I've heard of them (I think the Roger Waters bass might have one,) but I've never had any experience that I remember with playing with a bass that had one.

They're ok. I'm just more used to artificial bone, or bone. Yep, the RW Precision has a brass nut.

That's one part of an instrument that I never paid that much attention to. I've usually noticed differences in bridges, but I suppose everything can play a part in the overall sound and/or performance.

I only had the one bass with a brass nut, the RW Precision.

You had a Roger Waters Precision Bass? When was that?

About 3 years ago now. I still think that's one of the finest MIM basses made. The one thing that I felt a bit uncomfortable with it, was the 1.75" at the nut. Just a bit wider than the now standard 1.65" Precision nut. But the Seymour Duncan pup on it is great.

You know, now that you mention it, I think I remember you posting about that bass now. I do seem to recall one of those being posted in a thread around here somewhere. It's certainly a bass that will stand out a bit, since it doesn't exactly look like a regular (not modified or customized) P Bass.

As far as looks went for the RW P, the ETB92 Nylons looked good on it too. All that Black on it.

I'll bet it did. I take it you're done with P Basses, though?

Pretty much. I'm really comfortable playing a Jazz. If I did do a Precision, it would be a Standard / Maple, Arctic White.

You wouldn't bother with another Roger Waters model, then? Then again, you could just get a Standard P in black and swap out the pick guard and have a close enough version, sans the pick up and hardware and probably save $200. There's a part of me that wouldn't mind an actual P Bass, even though I have three basses that have the P and J pick up configurations. There's something to be said for that set up. It's a classic sound on it's own, I think. There's been many times I've missed and regretted selling my 50's Reissue P Bass, that's for sure.

That 50's Reissue would have been a nice one to have hung on to. But, things happen don't they.
The Seymour Duncan pup is the real sound producer that's worth having on the RW P.

Yeah, I suppose it would probably cost the same, or close to the price of the Roger Waters, if you were to modify a Standard P Bass with everything that model has, like that pickup. Plus, the time and the ability to install everything. I mean ability with the fact you'd have to know how to solder, which I really don't know how to. I suppose like anything else, I could learn. Probably a good idea, anyhow.

Knowing how to solder, was somewhat of a must being on the road back then. It's not hard. Just don't over do the amount of solder used on a connection. Make sure your connection is clean, and solid before soldering it in place.

Well, technically I did have some experience with soldering. I took an electronics class (where you learn about ohms, circuits, and all of that jazz) when I was in the 9th grade in high school. Unfortunately, I wasn't even a musician for another 3 years and I didn't really have a though to pursuing that information, not that they taught an extensive amount of stuff to begin with. If I only had the foresight to pay closer attention to that, and went into it further. Like they say, could have, should have, would have. :P Still, that would be something handy to pick up, though.
