In an attempt to get this thread back on topic, especially after my last post, I did some serious jamming with the Squier Jazz Bass again for about an hour and a half. I've been really liking the way it's been playing lately. I think the strings are broken in nicely, which helps.

Image Getting back on topic,........
Fender Jazz Basses are hard to beat. Great playing, especially when you get the strings broken in. Play that Jazz.

Yeah, they're perfect right now. I've made the decision to go with the flats on the violin bass. I thought I'd keep using rounds on it, but after extensively playing the Squier Jazz, I just like the feeling of the flats when I'm playing. There's less friction there, I think. Sure the rounds have a twang to them, but I also think the hollow body style has a distinctive tonal quality to it with either flats or those nylon strings, which I still would like to try someday. I think it will be on another bass, though. I still have to get use to the real estate of the violin's short scale neck. It's a lot more compact and I think the thick strings like that would hamper me, at least until I get use to the neck. Something like the Squier or Schecter Jazzes would be fine with those, I think. As for rounds, I do have that Ibanez bass which has them on there in which I can have them installed. That's a good bass for that sound, anyhow. It's good to have a diverse tonal pallet available, I think.

I agree with flats, or Nylons on a violin bass.

Talking about getting use to a short scale, I think part of that has to do with the neck's configuration. The nice feel of the neck on the short scale Fender Mustang PJ, feels a lot like a Fender long scale Jazz. I really don't think there's that much to adjust to, short to long scale, when the neck is almost the same configuration.

I think the spacing between the strings plays into it, too. I'm not sure what the measurement of the width of the nut on the violin bass, but I'm pretty sure it's probably shorter than the Jazz. I'll get use to it, I'm not worried about that. Especially, with flats.

Some of the nuts are a Precision in length, not sure though how they do the string cuts in them.

Hopefully better than some of the Ric's cuts.

Is that what you were saying with the strings lined up too close to the edge of the fretboard?
