I took guitar lessons at Shoemakers Music. It was a group lesson, with about six people crammed into this little room up on the second floor. I hadn't thought about that in years.

I only took a few lessons here and there to get me started, but I'm mostly self taught. A lot of time playing and trial and error.

My lessons didn't last to long either. I wasn't good on a six stringer anyway.

I think with me, I didn't want to practice the usual scales and whatnot (although, they did come in handy as I went along,) but wanted to learn songs from albums. Music theory is a good thing to know, though. It can help in a lot of different ways.

Music theory is a big plus, for sure. Sight reading is another.

I did some drum lessons for a while as well. The bass is my place in music. I was however at one time, a good French Horn player.

When was the last time you played that? I always thought it would be cool to play horns.

In high school. I actually played Trumpet, Sousaphone, and French Horn. I was probably the best with the French Horn. Me and Entwistle.

I always wanted to play the sax being that it was proclaimed to be sexy and all that. What a failure and disappointment for me when I couldn't even get the reed thingy down. :(

I never thought of horn playing for many years after that until a room mate asked me to show him how to play the drums. I made a deal with him on the basis that he showed me how to play his trumpet.

Lessons began and I got as far as playing the scales until one day my lip hurt and it was pointed out that my lip was in for a beating before calluses set in. I decided that horn playing was not for me, and so I left it in good hands with Herb and Dizzy.

I suppose another thing is using breath control or whatever to actually make a decent noise with it. It probably wouldn't be a good idea to be chain smoking unfiltered Camels when you're learning that. :P

Smoking can be a detriment to breathing. The bout I had six years ago with the pneumonitis was enough fun.

I smoked for about 25 years and when I quit many years ago I was smoking two packs a day. Now, after a wicked withdrawal, I, thankfully, miss two packs a day.

It was worth it.

I quit back in 2004. I tell you though, it sucks those things are so bad for you. Even though I won't do it, there's still a time or two I'd love to have one. Especially, after a cup of coffee or a cocktail.

I stopped in 1985, and that was it for me.

In my 20s I paid 15 cents per package because of cigarette company courtesy and promotion to the military. Bad idea for me - good for them. YMMV

I later started a new job in a new city that put me in control rooms that were smoke free. That gave me incentive to quit in 1985 like you Glenn.

I wish I had the foresight to have bought guitars with that chump change spent on coffin nails. :? On the other hand , I missed my chance to build cigar box guitars.

Now I hear that the cigarette companies are pushing Vapes.

I really miss my pipes. Some of them had nice tone wood; but, I don't break 'em anymore.
