That's the one thing about the Squier Bass VI or other 6-string basses that I've wondered about, is what's really the ideal amp to use with one. When we had the Schecter Ultra VI, we ran it through the Rumble 350 combo, and another time through the Fender Super Champ. From using both of those amps, I thought about the idea of running both amps together, to utilize the whole tonal range of that instrument, since it covers both bass and guitar aspects, more or less. We wound up getting rid of it, so that never happened. If we got another one of those 6-string basses, Squier or otherwise (preferably Squier, since the Fender ones are expensive as hell, if you can even find one,) I'd be the one probably playing it, since my girlfriend is into playing drums these days, and not into playing any guitar, or bass, especially live, and I'd probably have to plug it into the Ampeg, since that's the only available amp for me right now. I don't have one, so it's a moot point, anyway. That would be a bridge to cross once I'd get there, if I ever did.

Interesting Glenn and Paul. Can’t disagree with either analogies. A combo of two opposing amps Isn’t all that crazy, Paul. Getting the right ones would be an adventure that could be rewarding. Maybe, a little hocus pocus through a mixer and PA with or without enhancements, a pedal board could add icing on the cake. Hmmm. Let’s mod one to stereo and add separate tone controls.

That Marshall direction and lots of punch with a beefy amp seems to make sense too, according to what I’ve read, Glenn. After all, it’s common knowledge that Marshall followed the lead of Fender’s Bassman and that’s an amp that is appreciated for both bass and for guitar. If it wasn’t for the expense, my thinking is that the Bassman could be one excellent amp choice. These days emulation or a suitable alternative is pretty good; but, considering Bassman was around when this baritone Fender came out, perhaps, Marvin put it best, “Ain’t nothing like the real thing”.

Fender or Squire? Yamaha or Steinway? Okay, I’m stretching it. I’m blessed to have had the opportunitIes to tinkle with Concert, Classic, and Baby grands, the Yammy more of course, but also a Steinway. To Yamaha’s credit they’ve come a long way in leaps and bounds. Is Yammy a Steinway? I have an audiophile CD that samples Steinway models from throughout the ages, and my answer would be “in some cases sometimes”. That said, if it plays good and sounds good it is good. This Squire VI model sounded pretty good to me. Definitely has a fun factor, Paul.

Hey, Fender! Make a Daphne Blue model. Puleese. :P

And when you're somewhat talking a powerful tube Fender, its base was from the Sunn tube, that Fender acquired from Sunn. So its almost like being back to Marshall, and Sunn again.

Good point, Glenn. I was surprised to see the demise of Sunn when it happened; but, then again Sunn also used other companies’ workings (such as Hafler and Dynaco). Fender used Sunn and bought them so that fate was inevitable I suppose.

Another lesser known Fender like amp that I’m familiar with, their having had somewhere around 40,000 amps made in the past, after father and son added bigger tubes in hot rodded Bandmasters and Bassmans for more boost (Hmm. a touch of Fender with a Marshall twist), is this popular original from the ’Peg.

I've heard about those in my internet travels. There's also Traynor, which is still in business and putting out amps. Although, I have no clue who sells the damned things, unless you're in Canada, these days. I tried using their dealer locator on their site, but it was having some technical issue with it. I remember when I started playing bass, there was a local shop that carried Yorkville amps there, when they were using that name, and had some 400 watt bass combo, with a 15" speaker and kind of a blue covering on it.

By the way, out of curiosity, I tried looking to see if there were any Fender Bass VI's in Daphne Blue, but the closest I found was some custom shop one in Seafoam Green, and it was $4750. http://willcuttguitars.com/fender-custo ... -red-769-1

Hey there, Paul. That Custom Sea Foam Green one (a looker to be sure) appears to be a cheap steal. The used ones can hit 6-7 Grand, and maybe more. Even the new Custom ones are outa my league. Thanks, for checking around.

Baritone or bass? I found this interesting:

I think I can help with Traynor though. Long and McQuade is the place where I’m a regular. It was located 2 blocks from home. L&M is nation wide here in Canada with two stores having recent new facilities and a new third one just opened here in Winnipeg. If it’s musical they have it. It’s the biggest music retailer in Canada, and a major Fender provider (including my Strat) along with others.

The link should take you to the bass section of L&M’s Traynor, originated by L&M co- founder Peter Traynor, Before the mass market that we have today, in my youth Traynor was a popular
affordable amp found quite often in Canadian bands. I tried a sweet one a couple of years back, and they are still a nice alternative IMHO. I know less about their bass gear, but I suspect Traynor follows their history. Looks to be good with complimentary reviews. Yorkville is a continuing Canadian line of gear originally from Jack Long of Long and McQuade.

https://www.long-mcquade.com/?page=depa ... rBrand=135

If the link changes . . . just search for Traynor on L&M.

I had a new bass Traynor head in early 1970. Things were getting so crazy for me back then, today I don't remember the model that it was. But I do remember, it kicked a lot Fender Bassman heads back then.

The demise of Sunn for me was a great tragedy. It to me was one of the last earlier Amps that got things really cranking up. Before the mammoth PA's came into being, the Amps were the power that drove, and ponded the sounds into all of the sleeping people's minds out there. It was a true wake up time in my life, I know that for sure. I'll always be glad I was there for it.

A 70s Traynor bass head in your past possession, Glenn? Well, that’s very cool. Curious to know if it jumped the border? Perhaps, used or did they sell them where you were?

I’m glad you got the good times and vibes back in the day too. That comes with a lot to appreciate, and for me some self inflicted missed opportunities because those days were full of opportunities when so many influential folk were accessible and approachable. Really a tough road today so I feel for those struggling. I know this much, Glenn, you and I. along with others here, know how much work and sacrifice is involved in the full time entertainment business and the ups and downs, but the pluses make it special and the other stuff comes with the territory, great support, and comradeship. You learn to have a little True Grit along with it, and boy do you get to read people well. Sometimes that’s a disadvantage.
As for Sunn, promotion was sparse here in Canada, and yet they did something right because we knew of their reputation. Just like Traynor probably got noticed in border cities like Detroit and Seattle, I’m thinking Sunn got it’s share reciprocally up here. Of course, stage and studios are pretty representative of what’s out there and what’s popular. On the other hand tricks and secrets up the sleeve are sometimes not released often until the golden soundmaker is somewhat no longer available or a rarity. I read that Sunn grabbed a hold on solid state later than they probably should have.

Then again look at the Ford Mustang not wanting to miss the boat. It’s now being released as a crossover electric vehicle! Krazy, huh?

Speaking of Traynor, here's a website about their stuff from back in the day. I'm sure Glenn's amp is in there somewhere. http://www.0rigami.com/vb/index.html

By the way, Long & McQuade don't ship outside of Canada, so if I wanted to order a Traynor from them, I'd have to make a 6 hour drive just to get to the Canadian border, then however long it would be to even get to one of their locations. Also, that would be tricky, since I currently don't have a passport (probably would be a good thing to get, I think,) and they wouldn't let me in, anyway. Besides that, I wonder if there are any duty fees or whatever if I did manage all of that, and came back across the border to deal with? I wonder even if you could order something from Canada, what would the shipping even entail, or cost to begin with? I've never bought anything from there that I remember, but have from the UK a few times.

My Traynor was a new one. I bought it at a local Fort Lauderdale shop, that was just into being a Traynor dealer.

Do you remember the particular model you had? If you check out the link I posted above your last post, it might have it posted on that site.

Ah, Fort Lauderdale. Had a good time there in ‘67 (when I was 20) on my way through Panama.

I didn’t know Traynor had reached that far. Your amp must have been a bit of a rarity there. Traynor was very popular here in those days. Pretty cool, Glenn. :D

I had some good connections in the local music shops back then. There were several shops that were getting into the Distributor / Retail of Ampeg, Marshall, Sunn, Kustom etc. here too.

62/63 was Marshall’s beginning. Local British distribution bloomed in ‘65. That same year Jimi was on tour in England, and because he couldn’t use his usual Fender amp, October ‘65 served him well with Marshall in London. The continuation of the earlier British Invasion included Marshall in ‘65. In ‘66 Jimi continued with Marshall and Fender accordingly, and popularity spread along with music change, but it was circa ‘68 AFAIK when the wide spread availability of Marshall came about in North America. The Brits with their Marshall Invasion in and around ‘65 made it possible that a few of those amps became stragglers or gifts over here; but, there would be very few if any. Importing costs were prohibitive and Marshall amps were marked up a lot by those marketing the goodies. Strange for an amp designed to be a cheaper option to Fender overseas at first start.
I finished high school not far from Jimi and the Ventures. Talk about opposite amps. I also lived in a predominantly British populated area with a predominantly west coast music vibe. You might hear just about any amp or guitar back then with a lot of American gear playing early 60s British rock and pop which you didn’t hear combos like that until later in England. Hahaha. As I moved further east in Canada to Guess Who and Neil Young territory there were more Gibbys and Marshall’s to sample. I guess that would be a similar culture shock if making the move from Mailibu to Nashville In the 60s. :P
As for Kustom, I remember the first sparkling blue Tuck-and-Roll Naugahyde bass amp and cab I saw at a school dance in ‘65 (likely a Frankenstein). In a town filled with customs and rods, we didn’t pay particular attention to the finer points of sound that day, but we sure noticed that look and it rocked the house.
For even more impact, it was the first and last padded Kustom I saw on the Island for some time.
In keeping with the topic I’ll add two of Kustom’s other vintage offerings:

. . . and, just to stir things up with the wacky world of guitars, just when you think sumpin’ is this or that is it?

If you're interesting in looking into info on vintage Kustom stuff, this is a pretty good site: http://www.vintagekustom.com/frame.html
