That alone can be a toss up between the amp, and a bass for a players priority. With the settings, different drivers, and cab design, the bass amps have advanced to a bit more of a consideration for importance. Most basses are still somewhat about the same as they were from years ago. The newer pups on a bass can be better now, if you like the sounds they give you that is.

Yeah, there is the tonal aspects of everything. I think the playability is the top thing, otherwise you're not going to be too inclined to even want to mess with it in the first place.

A good example of that, is we have an old Harmony acoustic guitar, probably from the 70's, that's been collecting dust in the living room because the action on it is horrendous. I used to play it many years ago, but it's difficult to do that past the 5th fret. It needs new tuners, too. Other than that, I don't remember it sounding too bad, and it does keep it's tune, despite the fact the tuners are wonky. It's one of those types that have the slotted headstock and the three tuners on one piece of metal, like you'd see on nylon string guitars. It's definitely a steel string model, though. The neck would be wider, if it were.

I never had a bass sit that long not being played. I've had them maybe sit unplayed for a couple of weeks, but that's been about it.

I didn't even buy this guitar, nor did my girlfriend. I think her mom or step dad found it at some estate sale, or something like that and brought it over the house years ago. Maybe I can get it set up to where it has better action, and all of that, but that would cost money, and if I wanted to get an instrument fixed up, it would be one of the basses that need work which would be the priority first, or maybe that Strat we have that was my girlfriend's sister's. That guitar is in sad shape, but the action on it is good, at least. I could probably do most of the work on that one, other than maybe a setup. I think maybe the electronics might need work, maybe just a cleaning. I don't know, I haven't plugged that guitar in at least 10 years. Probably the same amount of time since I've played that acoustic. :P

Speaking of acoustics, I did have this one acoustic that was really nice, which we got for free, like the Harmony. It was a short scale model, of which I can't remember the name, if it had one, but it had low action to it, and played and sounded nice. I loved that guitar, but unfortunately, I accidentally killed it. I was sitting in the couch in the living room, with it leaning on the side, because I was going to play it, and the damned thing fell over and smacked face down on the hardwood floor and snapped the headstock off. That was that. I was seriously bummed out, but I guess that's what can happen if you have your guitar leaning like that. Still, I was kind of surprised it broke like that, because it didn't really fall that hard, but maybe it just hit it at the right spot and did it in. I've had other instruments do a worse fall and nothing happen to them, but they were also electric basses, and probably a lot tougher built. I do miss that guitar, though. Oh, well.

It's hard to guess which head / neck will fail on an impact. You guess is as good as mine for that issue. I'm extra careful with the Epi EB-0 for the head / neck failures of that design. OUCH!

Yeah, I know what you mean. That was certainly a lesson how to be more careful with guitars, especially acoustics. If I have to rest one anywhere, it would be on the couch itself, at an angle to where it won't fall like that again.

Without a stand at hand, it can be tough as to where is a safe place to set it.

That's true. I also have this clamp guitar holder that can attach to anything that you can clamp it to which also works pretty well. I have that one in the office. I've thought about getting some more of those, so I don't push my luck in there with the other two instruments I have in there. I don't really have the space to use a regular guitar stand, unfortunately.

Sorry to hear that, Paul. I've had a few close calls but no damage. Like you said, it must have hit just the wrong way to break it.

Yeah, it didn't even fall down hard, or with a lot of force, just slid off the side of the couch and I think it might have hit face down, I don't remember exactly, since it's been probably 10 years since that happened. I had leaned it on the side of the couch just for a moment and was going to sit down to play it, and it just happened. It broke almost in the middle of the headstock, so there wasn't anything I could do about it. I got it for free, and it probably wasn't really worth anything in the first place, so there wasn't any point or logic to spend any money and try to get it fixed, if even that was possible. What that would cost, you could just get another guitar of similar quality, probably. Still, it did have a nice neck and action to it, and seemed to stay in tune well. Not too shabby for something that you'd most likely find in some Goodwill thrift store, or somewhere like that, more so than a typical music shop.

That's my advantage now, with only having one bass. The room is small, but just big enough to keep the stuff in, and play in there as well.

You know Glenn sometimes I wish I only had one guitar. Make that two so I could have an acoustic also. I only have six guitars but most of them haven't been played in quite awhile and it seems like a waste.

I think we have a total of 12 instruments around here, but they all are in various places in the house, and some of them need work done to them. I keep the three that I use the most next to me, along with the Fender Rumble 350 combo. Sometimes, I'll play the others, but I primarily stick with the two basses in the office, and I've started playing more on the Telecaster again. In fact, I played a little bit on it, yesterday.
