There really isn't anything to be sorry about actually. No telling when any of us will be dust in the wind. Mostly, the older someone gets, the more prone they are to hitting the trail. Who knows how long I have. I don't know.

That's true. Although, I think the one thing that can give you longevity is keeping your brain active. Stagnation will kill you a lot quicker. The worst thing you can do is sit around the house and do absolutely nothing but watch TV. The fact that you still go and jam out in your house is actually really beneficial to you, despite any physical ailments that might be occurring, or not. Maybe that's why music can keep you young. I guess when you get into any of the excesses associated with it is what can get to you.

Taking care of the house, Apollo busts my chops at times of the day. Going to the grocery store, Home Depot, PetSmart, etc. Somewhere in there I play the bass for a bit too.

Yeah, walking around Home Depot is an adventure in itself. That place is friggin' huge, and you have to search miles to find anything, if you don't know where it is. :P The only time we go there is maybe once or twice a year, if at all, rarely more than that. The last time was to get supplies to put together a set for a music video. We wound up getting some paint we didn't even use, but I'm sure it will come in handy someday for something. Things like that often do.

There was a real old time family owned, and run hardware store I used to buy from years ago. I sure wish it was still around. It's gone just like the family owned music stores are.

I remember some places like that, as well, when I was in St. Pete. As soon as Home Depot came into being, that was pretty much the end of the road for them. There is a hardware store like that here that has that old school vibe, although they might be an Ace Hardware affiliated place, I'm not too sure. It looks small from the store front, but when you go in there, it's actually good sized, because it's a really long building, just not as wide. It's an old building from the end of the 19th, to the early 20th century, so that's probably why. I'm sure a lot of local people go in there since Home Depot is actually several miles away in the next town, and a lot of times it's just easier to deal with that, anyway.

Didn't they actually sell guitars and things like that in hardware stores back in the day, maybe the 50's or the 60's? I've read things like that, with Elvis Presley getting his first guitar in some hardware store, and some other things mentioned.

I lived in a rural township and nearby was a local general store with rubber boots hanging from the rafters and spitoons on the floor for those that chawed tobacco. In the nearby town was another independent small town hardware store, and I seem to recall the odd musical instrument in there amongst all the good crap. There was no lack of harmonicas and Jews’ harps which today may be better known as a juice harp, jaw harp, mouth harp (can be confused with harmonica), and many more namings both politically correct and culture related. It’s one of the oldest and widespread throughout the world instruments. I can tell you this. My father taught me to play it, but my teeth against the metal hurt so I quit, and picked up the harmonica.
I love those stores. I loved to fish fresh and saltwater species, and always wanted a Varaflame clear lighter with a collection of fishing flies in them. On a road trip in the U.S. my decades old search ended. I finally found a large emptied Varaflame display box behind a hardware store cash register with only two lighters left. Eureka! A red fly and a black and white fly remained. Sold for a song! The owner had forgotten they even existed from long ago. :D Sadly, the luggage that carried them home was stolen on that same trip.
Later I searched for the perfect white bust of Beethoven. After exhausting a search in this city, another road trip to the next province found a small hardware store and it came through with the goods. There was Ludwig just like I wanted him. I told the shopkeeper how hard it was to find, only to be told that Mr. B. came from where I had just come from. Winnipeg.
Not only did big box stores hurt the little hardware stores, but the Internet also is responsible, except for those that thrive with it, although few can.

Paul this old coot as a kid worked for a 5 and dime store Kresges. Like Woolworth and others, you could find guitars and maybe even cheap drums for sale. Especially when Westerns were popular from the 30s and into the 50s. Roy Rogers, Hopalong Cassidy, Gene Autry, and other inexpensive guitars graced the shelves. They helped to make guitars a household item. http://cowboyguitars.net/
Maybe not the best (however, after a set up you might get lucky); but, the nostalgia, artwork, and odd rarity has brought some value to them over the years. Small towns might have had a hole in the wall with a Sears catalogue outlet, and not only Silvertone would find it’s way there.

Yeah guys, those real hardware stores were something. There was a good feeling walking into one. Everyone working there had a good working knowledge of what they sold. If there was something a guy didn't know, there was some one there that knew about it. They worked together to help customers. For me it was Pompano Mercantile, gone but not forgotten.

Ya got that right, Glenn. Knowledgeable In a different way than the big box stores. Mrs. FSB and I once moved into a 100 year old house where paintings were hung from 12 foot ceilings and the gap beneath the crown moulding required a special hook that hung ribbon on either side of the frame. Fortunately, after no luck, a kind soul pointed us to an old neighbourhood hardware store and they specialized in hardware for the old homes. Needless to say they knew what we needed for period correctness and filled the bag. :)

Now the so called big box stores are tanking, but I do see little shops pop up here and there sometimes, so I guess everything goes in circles.

You know, I had a Mickey Mouse guitar I got for Christmas for some bizarre reason, when I was a little kid, years before I had any musical inclinations. I have no idea what happened to it, but it was something like that, albeit the 70's version. I don't even remember it other than getting it for Christmas, and maybe trying to mess with it a couple of times afterwards. Lost to the mists of time, I suppose.

Funny how things like that seem to vanish, somewhere.

Oh, I know. The strange thing is that I had completely forgotten about that until now. You ever have that happen where you all of the sudden remember something long forgotten, maybe from your childhood, or whatever? There's that, or the most mundane, random thing will pop up that doesn't even necessarily do with you, but you remember it, anyway, maybe years or decades later. The brain is funny like that, I think. :P

Yeah.

Where I used to work when somebody wanted something we’d always direct them to a related locker (just like the paint is in the ‘paint’ locker). Me thinks all this missing stuff is likely in the “vanished” locker. Except, I don’t know where that is. It’s gone missing.

Maybe there's some sort of vortex into another dimension where it goes? :P
