Cool bass. 8) Is that the one you had before, or a totally new one?

That EPi screams Rock and Roll, Glenn. Nice!

I did a long long time ago. My Dad used to go to Pearl often, and he brought me one back. I’m old enough to remember when Hawaiian and exotic music was available in most record stores. I even looked up the traditional rather than the commercial Tiny Bubbles tunes. Can’t say I was proficient at it. More like deficient. Tiny Tim had nothing to worry about.
There’s some pretty cool high quality ukes trending today, however. I’m sure the U.S. has us beat in popularity; but, I’ve noticed there is no shortage of selection in some of the local stores here, so someone is buying them. Once you get over the novelty and grass skirts, there’s some serious music to be made, and it’s not all Hula music.:P

I love it when instruments are taken to another area outa their comfort zone.

It's the same one, with the neck being adjusted by an old friend that knows what he's doing. Nice to have it back again. A great player, that has a fantastic sound.

The Epi's are doing what Gibson could do, at an affordable price.

If I remember correctly, George Harrison really liked the ukulele. If you were a guest at his house, and played guitar, you played a ukulele.

Nice and amusing video. I have a newly-found respect for the uke. 8)

Yup! It seems fitting that with the violin bass and Beatle connection we are speaking of ukes.

As for George and respect for these tiny string instruments:

Yeah, it's certainly expanded with what it was in the past, with all kinds of options, electrics, amps, and even bass models, which are tuned like a regular bass. I had one when I started playing bass, but I really didn't know what to do with it, since I could even barely play the bass at the time, and didn't even know how to even tune it, since there was no internet back then, and couldn't look it up. I don't even know what happened to it, since it disappeared before I even moved out of my parent's house at the first time at 19.

A few years later, I was messing around with a borrowed mandolin, and recorded a song idea with it on my old 4-track recorder, mic'd up and going through an effects processor. I did know a mandolin was tuned like a bass, but in reverse order, and just played some two note chord shapes with it, with bass, guitar, and a drum machine using a lot of toms. I really didn't know much about mandolin, either. I just figured since it had strings on it, and I actually knew how to tune it, maybe I could make something up and not sound too bad at it. :P

I know what you mean about taking instruments out of their comfort zone, or at least playing them in a not traditional manner. Like maybe playing a banjo through a cranked Marshall stack or a fuzz pedal, or just messing around with various stringed instruments. There's so many out there, especially around the world. This place here sells all kinds of stuff like that: https://larkinthemorning.com/ It's one of my favorite sites on the web. They used to have a print catalog that I'd get years ago, but they stopped sending them out, unfortunately.

Yeah, that was cool that you were still be able to get it back. You've been lucky about that. Anything I've ever sold I never saw again.

Mandolins are way cool. Paul. I’ve never tried one, but I’m afraid I wouldn’t do it justice any more than a violin.
Lark in the Morning looks to be a treasure trove. It just so happens that when I was in Canada’s LaLa land last month I stumbled into an interesting shop that was similar. Gandharva Loka. When we discovered this little shop crammed with quality world instruments, tourists, and knowledgeable musicians passing through on artistic Granville Island in Vancouver, I found the world to be even bigger than life itself. My favourite experience was when we were given a demo of a sound cradle chair where strings go vertical behind and around the chair back (scroll down in the link below and see sound cradle) http://www.gandharvaloka.com/en/string-instrument.html The sound emits from hollowed out carvings about the chair and the harp embraces your outer and inner self like no other instrument. It’s truly amazing. No pedal board required. :x
There are many more varieties of sound cradles, many on YouTube, but this is the one I heard. Now if only Mrs. FSB would cooperate and play this for hours on end while I chant om I could join in on some of those great tablas. Too bad I no longer have my camel hair Nehru jacket and round rose glass shades so I could see how it doesn’t fit anymore. I think I have some incense left over from yesteryear. :P OM

I think that goes back to some of the gear I use, isn't how should we say, too mainstream for other players? My Epi Viola, was another bass that literally sat in a corner, and no one touched it. It's a better bass then when I had it the first time around. You're right, it's a whole lotta' luck.

That's an interesting instrument. I've never seen or heard about that one before. That sounds like a very cool shop to come across. You know, I think if you can play a guitar, you can more or less play pretty much any other string instrument, or at least sound like someone playing it that usually plays guitar. :P There are certain techniques that are associated with certain instruments, like clawhammer on the banjo, but I suppose you can also apply that to a guitar, as well.

That's a good point. I suppose if it were a Precision or Jazz bass, or something more common like that, it might have moved a lot faster. It all depends on how people are hung up on the genres of music they play, as well. You'll see heavy metal players typically with Jackson and Ibanez, that sort of thing. The funny thing about that is my girlfriend loves Jackson Dinky guitars, not because she plays metal (she doesn't,) but because of the necks on them are smooth and fast as hell, but she'll most likely never use one live because of the fact they visually look like heavy metal guitars, and that's not her genre. I've been torn by that, as well. I don't know, maybe we shouldn't really give a damn and play whatever, but that doesn't often work out that way.

Glad you got your baby back, Glenn. It’s like a lost friend returned, huh?

I got to thinking, uh oh, about “another bass that literally sat in a corner, and no one touched it”.

You know, musicians and audiophiles are fickle, and they both hear things differently in a blind test, but they profess to be more critical with things they see and hear. Count me in for both. If that weren’t so, we wouldn’t be tweaking and changing all the time. There’s the audience that can’t tell the difference between a good sound and a good song with a good beat, etc. Then there’s the musician that satisfies himself while the other dudes on stage compete or ignore the obvious. We all know professed audiophiles that prefer solid state digital effects through an inferior amp and a set of Bluetooth speakers versus the guy who just blew a wad of money but still can’t get the sound he thinks he’ll hear if only . . . if only others would embrace his mojo. I’ve had dandy speakers and moderate to high end gear, and decent thrift store speakers (that seldom last) to fill a need.

I think it just comes down to taste and preference. Some like rice buggies and others like gas guzzlers. They both go fast but as far as the ride goes, it depends on what floats your boat. With guitars and basses it’s a personal thing.

I think of wine when I compare that lot. It has to meet one’s taste. It depends on the vintage, old or new age. It may sell with a fancy wrapper, cost is a factor, but to spend a lot will give you many choices. However, to find a great grab at a lesser price is not impossible, in fact that could be preferable or not. You might have a very good car, stereo, or wine; but, I may or may not like it. Your axe may be terrific, and I may not appreciate it. Others may not know what is good. Still others buy into the popularity without a bona fide personal preference.

I’ve been right or wrong over the years with my choices. I don’t go out of my way to buy what everyone else likes, often because it’s a trend, and trends don’t usually have a lasting quality. However, there’s a reason to buy the popular choice (at times), especially for maintenance and improvement (hopefully not because you'll have to), and I’ve regretted that loss too.

Whether it’s a car, a stereo, wine, axe, or any other pleasure, I think you owe it to yourself to try it out before you poo poo it. Me? Get my Strat outa the car, crank up the tunes, and let’s try the other bottle of wine.

Oh, and one more thing. If you haven’t tried the cool toque in the corner, you don’t know what yer missin’. :P
Play if ya got ‘em,

At times over the years, I acquired a certain type of gear I had more trust in the reliability, and service backing, if needed. Some brands do offer better backing of their products better then others do. Unfortunately, at times that isn't known until an issue occurs.
