Funny thing about amps. There’s kinda three schools of thought with combos.

One school is grab the on-board effects and limit the pedals and/or cabs. Not to say a head amp and cab isn’t a fine combination. It certainly can be, but then we all know that. For many this setup works just fine if the components are matched well. I’m of the belief the guitar and/or bass should be included in those components, and what sounds good with one may not apply with another. How does that combo with a LP versus a Tele or Strat versus an acoustic for example work for ya? Flexibility can be a blessing or a curse. Often separates are compromised because of design or budget. The design of combos tend to take this into account, but not always. While there is generally room for improvement, combos are pretty good for their intended purpose across the board as history shows. For the moment my Mustang IV can do that. No. Not with the mojo and tone of a tube amp, but it does fill a need. It can fill in for the acoustic, but it is not optimized for an acoustic and even comes with an acoustic preset.
Incredible sound IMHO at a budget, and as A/B tested against the real thing; but, that’s a far cry from the Bandmaster and spring reverb I first played in ‘65. :P YMMV

Here’s the second school of thought. Okay, so with (or without) an amp that is effects deficient there are pedals. Many choose the best basic amp of their groove and one the budget can afford. The cool thing is your choice of colourful pedal effects will always be there at your beckon and call (with the ability to mix and match, change, or add) should you change amps or PA. Maybe, not the same sound, but similar. That’s the good part. The bad part is they’re pedals, and they’re cool as long as they don’t collect dust in a corner. Just kiddin’. But, it’s a whole different ballgame to be sure. You might need a roadie. :P
Alternatives could be combo pedals such as the Helix like BMW-KTM has, a Kemper alternative like a friend of mine has, or like the Boss ME-80 that Marky has. Others also apply. Of course, if you already have favourite pedals, perhaps, a simple amplification is all that is needed. :) Besides, great sounds are available at all prices. You just have to look around. Fender is making some cool pedals these days.

Lastly, you could keep your chosen amp and change guitars or bass for that sweet spot. :P
Getting that pure clean sound? Well, now, depending on circumstances and choice, you might have a challenge there rock star. Some amps shine in that challenge while others needn’t show up for the contest.

I’m sure you’ll make a fine choice, Paul. Wear yer toque for good luck. :D
Cheers!

The main thing that I do have to factor in is cost, which definitely affects everything else. So that leaves out any tube amps, since they are usually pretty expensive, unless they are 5 watts, and even then they can cost. I'm not picky about that, anyway.

Ain’t that the truth?!

I recall that’s why when I was a young ‘un living far from a music store I could be seen playing 5 strings on a six string, and maybe I’d have a taped drum skin taken from the top and changed with the bottom of a tom tom. Sure got a lot of mileage with nicked and battered drumsticks too.

That's got me wondering, even though bass strings are typically a lot more expensive than guitar strings, but you can get a lot more mileage out of them, especially flat wounds, so I wonder how that works out in the long run? What's actually cheaper? I guess there also many variables to that, as well.

That’s an great question to an answer I certainly can’t say for sure, Paul. I’m thinking breakage is one thing, and of course initial cost, but then the accepted tone longevity (which could be questionable for a variety of reasons such as how many strokes, humidity, dormant periods, and a whole bunch of other real world scenarios) would definitely come into play (see how I did that?) :P

Well, I've had the same Ernie Ball strings that I put on my Squier Telecaster since probably 2013. Bass strings it's hard to say, since I've gone through a couple of basses since then, and haven't owned them too long. Oddly enough, the strings on the Tele are actually in good shape, because I rarely played it over that time. Maybe when I start gigging with it, I'll have to eventually change them out, because of extra use.

That’s been my experience too with my Strat set up to keep in tune better than I expected. However, I remember my 12 string not being as terrible as I would have thought when living on the coast. It was less stable here in the prairies. I will say first and second strings, especially the second “B” string, on more than one guitar, appears to be less reliable or bang on both initially and earlier down the road. It can give that sorta dead sound or not quite with it if being picky counts. (I really didn’t think I’d say that . . . honestly, it just happened) Hahaha.
I believe that even a change of brand is able to sidestep intonation questioning (in this case) finding some brands are better suited, and I know that these E and B strings as others have found replacement with other than a matched set for a variety of preferences. YMMV It’s not uncommon for other mixes and matches of strings away from a one brand or standard set up; although, I tend to follow the conservative approach, and for the most part it just works. :P
I guess the cheapest and most reliable string over time would be on a diddley bow.

I've never messed with strings like that, to mix and match, other than one time or another having a different bass string on a bass from one getting broken, and I couldn't afford a whole new set at the time. The reason I even have Ernie Balls on the Squier is because they sold them cheap in a 3-pack. Although, I'm not too cheap with strings, because I have notice some differences. I am more picky with bass strings, though. I just don't play enough guitar to really get that detailed with it. Maybe I will if I use it more than I do now.

I’m an old coot so my memory is not as sharp as it was; but, if I recall, my early mahogany acoustic’s nylon strings seemed to have been more in tune with each other than steel ones. Same for the ukulele, although maybe I’m wrong about that.
I’ve tuned pigskin heads with rope and leather tension, so it’s not like I can’t tune drums. It’s a blessing when they sound just right, and that can be an art and luck in itself.

Kaching!
